NEBRASKA – District Bowling competition was statewide on Wednesday as area schools competed for state championship bids for both boys and girls action.
In Lincoln at the Sun Valley Lanes, the Grand Island girls bowling team earned the A-6 District Championship with a win over top-seeded Norfolk. Individual qualifiers included Kaleigh Kuusela of Grand Island, rolling a total of 516.
The Grand Island boys fell to third-seeded Lincoln Southwest in their opening round, as the Islanders were second in total score but failed to qualify for the state tournament. Columbus would take the A-6 Title over Lincoln Southwest.
For the first-year Kearney Bearcats in the Class B-6 District, the girls ended third overall in total score at 1874 – narrowly passed by Arapahoe’s 1875 – as the Warriors took down the Bearcats in their opening matchup. Arapahoe would win the B-6 Title over Lexington, with the Minutemaids’ Daisy Gomez earning the top spot shooting 534. Her teammate Nineht Arevaol-Velasquez was fifth in the district at 417.
The Kearney Boys bowling team won the B-6 District over Lexington as the Bearcats won over Ogallala in their first round, followed by the victory over the Minutemen. Kearney ended with team total of 2169, as Hewitt Moyer and Jack Edwards were second and fourth as qualifiers at 499 and 456 respectively. Lexington’s Jonah Bryan was the top finisher at 676.
The Class B-5 District featured several area teams as well, as the Pastime Lanes in Hastings held their action on Monday, Jan. 29. Northwest claimed the B-5 District Championship over York for the girls, while the Dukes took down the Vikings for the B-5 Boys title.
The NSAA State Bowling Championships will take place in Lincoln at the Sun Valley Lanes beginning at Monday on Feb. 5 with Class B boys and girls, continuing action throughout the rest of the week until Thursday, Feb. 8. Full schedules can be found here.
