RAVENNA — On a Red Flag Warning day where fires seemed to be igniting all across central Nebraska, Ravenna firefighters were quickly able to contain a grass fire that threatened the northwest side of their community during the afternoon hours of Monday, Feb. 26.
Around 12:29 p.m., the Ravenna Volunteer Fire Department was made aware of a grass fire that had ignited northwest of town and had the potential to threaten homes in the Westridge Dr. area, just to the east of Ravenna Public Schools.
Despite the Red Flag Warning conditions in place, west winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, relative humidity as low as 12 percent and dry conditions, Ravenna firefighters were able to contain the flames before they neared any homes.
On scene, a grass rig was hosing down the edges of the burned area, while a Case loader was dumping sand on top of hotspots to smother them.
