OMAHA – Errors doomed the Kearney Baseball program on Tuesday night at Tal Anderson Field, suffering their first loss of the season to Papillion-LaVista 5-2. Click here to listen to the broadcast replay.
Kearney (2-1) fell, scoring two runs on three hits with two errors, while the Monarchs (2-0) won off of five runs with five hits and no errors. Papillion-LaVista took advantage of both Bearcat errors to lead them to runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Bearcats took the early lead up 1-0 after Bryce Anderson’s RBI Double brought in the opening run of the contest, but a missed throw from third to first in the bottom of the inning allowed Papillion-LaVista to advance off the error and eventually score the tying run.
Kearney would not plate another run until the final inning. The Monarchs feasted in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four of the five runs as an error would lead Papillion-LaVista into scoring position that eventually led to three consecutive runs scored.
Papio’s Brett Hoelscher earned the win with four innings pitched, allowing one hit, one run, one earned run, one walk, and eight strikeouts. The Monarchs pitching staff contributed 12 strikeouts in the contest.
Rhett Mundorf earned the start for Kearney, going four innings with one hit, one run, three walks, and one strikeout. Griffin Novacek fields the loss after going one inning, allowing four hits and four runs with two strikeouts.
The Bearcats are back in action on Friday and Saturday in the two-day Lincoln Pius X tournament.
