Hall Co. Election Commissioner gives presentation to City Council about voter ID

GRAND ISLAND — Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet told members of the Grand Island City Council Tuesday night, April 9, about changes in voter identification.

The issue was on the November 2022 ballot and took effect April 1. The first election where it will be enforced will be the May 14 election.
“98 percent of voters have a driver’s license or state ID,” Overstreet said.

Other forms of identification that are acceptable include a U.S. passport, Nebraska college or university ID (public or private), military ID, tribal ID, political subdivision ID (city, county, public school), or a “face sheet” from a hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility.

“We want to make sure that no voter is left behind,” Overstreet said.

In other business, the City Council:

  • *Heard a presentation from city finance director Pat Brown about various financial graphs that are available on the city’s website.
  • *Approved a request from Wasabi Sushi Bistro for a Class “I” liquor license by a 9-0 vote. Council member Chuck Haase was absent from Tuesday night’s meeting.
  • *Approved acquisition of permanent drainage easements for the Tri-Street Drainage Improvement Project by a 9-0 vote.
  • *Directed the city’s legal department to settle a property damage claim by a 9-0 vote.
  • *Approved $100,000 for Landscapes Golf Management for the operation of the city’s Jackrabbit Run Golf course. The request is per the city’s contract with Landscapes Golf Management. In December 2020, City Council approved a five-year contract with Landscapes Golf. Management to employ and be responsible for all golf course staff and manage day-to-day operations which includes property maintenance, food and beverage, payroll processing, and programming. The matter was approved by a 9-0 vote.
