Hastings College Softball v. College of St. Mary 2024 // HC Bronco Athletics

HASTINGS – The Hastings College softball team picked up a walk-off win over College of Saint Mary 9-8 in game two after dropping game one 4-1 on a beautiful Wednesday evening out at the Smith Softball Complex.

Hastings was able to take the lead in game one on a Lexie Mudloff RBI single to left but that lead would be short lived as the Flames would put up four runs behind three bloop singles to take a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Broncos did get a one out double from Katyn Kappler in the fifth but couldn’t do anything with it. Then HC was retired in order in the sixth and would get one runner on in the seventh but would get nothing out of it dropping game one 4-1. Hastings had just four hits in the loss.

Game two was a wild back-and-fourth contest as the Lady Broncos took a 3-2 lead in the second off of Kappler’s second home run of the season. That score held until the Flames put up two runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 6-3 but Hastings came back with a big response.

In the bottom of the sixth, Macie Mays led things off with a single and then Taylor Stuhr crushed a homerun over the centerfield fence to make it 6-5. Hastings then loaded the bases with one out and then Lauren Schneider tied the game with a RBI single to right. Mudloff would then ground out to short but it was enough to give HC the lead at 7-6 heading into the seventh.

CSM then picked up two more runs in the top of the seventh to regain the lead.

Hastings then came to the plate with some definite confidence as Mays started things off with a single to center followed by another single from Stuhr to put runners on first and second with no outs. Kappler then reached via an error by the pitcher as she was trying to sacrifice the runners but the pitcher threw the ball away allowing the tying run to score. The Flames would get the next two outs but Sam Skinner hit an absolute laser to left fied for the walk-off RBI single as Hastings managed a split with CSM.

Schneider led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Kappler would go 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Stuhr would go 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Skinner, Mudloff and Mays each had two hits. Hastings finished game two with 16 hits while the Flames had 14.

Hastings is no 15-21 (3-11) on the year and will be back in action Friday Apr. 19 hitting the road to take on Dakota Wesleyan in a doubleheader set to begin at 3:00 pm up in Mitchell, SD.
