HUSKER BASEBALL TAKES TERRAPIN SERIES WITH SUNDAY WIN:

Nebraska matched its season high in runs for the third time this season in a 16-4 thrashing of Maryland in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Nebraska (25-12, 8-4 Big Ten) totaled 16 runs on 16 hits, while Maryland (25-16, 6-9 Big Ten) had four runs on six hits and four errors.

Cayden Brumbaugh fell a homer away from the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and three runs scored.

Nebraska continues its homestand this week, welcoming Kansas to Hawks Field at Haymarket Park on Tuesday, April 23. First pitch between the Huskers and Jayhawks is set for 6:05 p.m.

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL SWEPT BY WOLVERINES:

Michigan scored nine runs over the third and fourth innings to defeat the Nebraska softball team 11-3 in six innings Sunday in Ann Arbor.

With the loss, Nebraska fell to 25-19 on the season and dropped to 8-6 in Big Ten play.

Following six consecutive road games, Nebraska returns home for five home games this week at Bowlin Stadium beginning with a Tuesday doubleheader against Iowa.

NEBRASKA BASKETBALL ADDS FORMER BADGER GUARD:

The Huskers added another shooter to the mix, one they’re well familiar with having previously scouted against. After visiting Lincoln on Thursday, Connor Essegian announced his commitment to Nebraska on Sunday afternoon.

The former Wisconsin Badger had visited Maryland and South Carolina last weekend before checking out Indiana on Wednesday. The Huskers got a visit that following day and are now the program he’ll represent.

A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Essegian averaged 11.7 points in more than 27 minutes per game for Greg Gard’s team two seasons ago when he was named to the all-Big Ten freshman team.

He shot 35 percent from behind the arc that season. His 69 3-pointers were a school record for a freshman, while he started 19 of 35 games that year.

STORM FALL IN OPENING GAME OF WESTERN CONFERENCE SEMIS:

The Tri-City Storm dropped the opening game of the team’s Western Conference Semifinal series against the Fargo Force by a final score of 3-1 Saturday night at Scheels Arena.

Ryan Smith netted Tri-City’s only goal during the 2nd period of the matchup.

The series resumes today with a 7:05pm CT puck drop at Scheels Arena.

HASTINGS NATIVE CALLED UP TO DOUBLE A BRAVES AFFILIATE:

Hastings native and former UNO Maverick Mike Boeve has been promoted to the Milwaukee Brewers Double-A team.

Boeve played baseball for Hastings high school and at UNO before being drafted by Milwaukee in 2023.

BEARCAT BASEBALL SWEEPS HOME TRIANGULAR; HEADS TO FREMONT:

Omaha South, and Norfolk High School made the trip to Kearney and Memorial Field for triangular. After a 13-3 run-rule victory over Omaha South, Kearney would shut out Norfolk, 7-0.

Kearney improved to 12-10, and hits the road for a busy week with a road trip to Fremont later today. KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at 4:45 PM with first pitch at 5.

The Bearcats continue their week heading to Bellevue East on Tuesday, hosting Lincoln Northwest on Wednesday, traveling to Hastings on Friday, and heading to Lincoln Southwest on Saturday.

UNK SOFTBALL SWEPT BY TOP-TEN BRONCHOS:

Senior designated player Tatum Long hit a Grand Slam in the top of the sixth inning to help sixth-ranked Central Oklahoma rally past Nebraska-Kearney, 6-5, in game two of a double header Saturday at Patriot Park.

The Bronchos (40-8, 20-2) took the opener five innings, 11-0. These were the final home games of the 2024 season for the Lopers (18-27, 16-16).

They finish up the regular season next weekend at eighth-ranked Rogers State and Northeastern State.
