UNK FOOTBALL READIES FOR LOPER BACKERS BANQUET:

The 14th Annual Loper Football Backers dinner and scholarship fundraiser will be held tonight at the Younes Conference Center North.

Attendance is once again expected to be close to 700 (70 tables) with things kicking off at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. with the program following around 7 p.m. 

Tickets are $50 per person, sponsor tables (seats nine plus one Loper football student-athlete) are $500 and fans unable to attend can still donate to the cause.

Since the banquet began in 2010, it has garnered over $2.4 million dollars for scholarships and other program needs.

 

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – MATT RHULE:

RHULE – SPRING GAME WILL BE ‘FOOTBALL’

Nebraska Football head coach Matt Rhule addressed the media after Thursday’s practice leading into Saturday’s Red-White Spring Game, and spoke about what his expectations for the scrimmage will be:

The Huskers will have back-to-back years of essentially a full-contact Spring Game, with ‘thud’ elements implemented for special teams and quarterbacks.

 

RHULE – GUYS WANT TO PLAY:

The Spring Game kicks off on Saturday at 11 AM from Memorial Stadium as pregame coverage on KGFW starts at 9 AM. 

 

RHULE – GOOD WORK ETHIC OVER SPRING BALL:

Nebraska Football head coach Matt Rhule has been happy with the competition level throughout spring practices leading up to Saturday’s Red-White Spring Game, with a few exceptions…

The Huskers will pit the No. 1 offense against the No. 1 defense with a mixture of reserves seeing action throughout the contest as well in a regular gameday format, with quarterbacks rotating teams during the contest. 

 

RHULE – EXCITED TO SEE QUARTERBACK OPERATIONS:

New equipment and new players has head coach for the Huskers Matt Rhule excited to see what’s in store for his young quarterbacks come Saturday’s Red-White Spring Game…

Daniel Kaelin, Dylan Raiola, and Heinrich Haarberg will all rotate teams throughout the contest. 

 

RHULE – HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR QUARTERBACKS FROM FANS:

Nebraska Football head coach Matt Rhule addressed Husker fans after Thursday’s practice, saying he knows what the fan base wants to see out of the team’s quarterbacks Saturday during the Red-White scrimmage…

Nebraska will have both freshman quarterbacks – Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin – as well as returning starter Heinrich Haarberg available for all action Saturday.

The Huskers will kickoff the action at 11 AM.

 

FARGO SWEEPS STORM; END TRI-CITY SEASON IN KEARNEY:

The Tri-City Storm’s season ended Wednesday night at the Viaero Center in a 5-3 loss to the Fargo Force. Tri-City dropped three games in the Best-Of-Five series, and was eliminated from the postseason.

It was the final game for head coach Anthony Noreen, who moved on to the University of Miami Ohio following the end of his Storm tenure. 

Next season is the Storm’s 25th anniversary season, with season tickets on sale now. 

 

CLASS A GIRLS, BOYS DISTRICTS RELEASED:

The 2024 NSAA Girls and Boys soccer districts have been released for Class A postseason play beginning with play-in games on Saturday.

The Kearney High Girls (13-2) are set to host the A-5 District and await the winner of the No. 4 Lincoln Northeast/No. 5 Omaha Northwest matchup for Monday, April 29 at Kearney High School. 

The Bearcat Boys (11-5) are the No. 2 seed in the A-5 District hosted by No. 1 Millard West (12-4). Kearney hosts No. 3 Columbus (7-7) at Kearney High School on Monday for the semifinal matchup.

HUSKERS RANKED SEVENTH IN DIRECTORS CUP:

Following an impressive winter season where all 10 Husker sports scored at the national level, Nebraska Athletics is ranked seventh nationally in the Learfield Directors Cup standings released Thursday, April 25.

The Huskers, who notched their first top-10 ranking at the end of the winter season since 2013-14 when they were ninth (638.00), produced their highest point total in the Learfield Directors Cup rankings since the turn of the century with 672.25 points, trailing only the 754 points through the winter season scored by the 1999-2000 Huskers.

It is the 10th time since the inception of the Directors Cup (1993-94) that the Huskers have been ranked among the top 10 nationally following the conclusion of the winter sports season.

 

BEARCAT BASEBALL’S BIG INNING BLASTS LINCOLN NORTHWEST:

The Bearcat Baseball team rallied on an eight run third inning to shut down Lincoln Northwest for a 12-2 Senior Day victory at Memorial Field. 

Kearney (14-11) won with twelve runs on eleven hits with two errors, while the Falcons dropped scoring two runs on four hits and one error. 

Jacob Hansen earned his first career win in his first start of the season with six innings pitched, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and two strikeouts. 

The Bearcats have their first day off from competition today before hitting the road on Friday afternoon to take on Hastings at Duncan Field. Pregame coverage begins at 4:15 PM with first pitch at 4:30 PM.

SATTERFIELD – QUARTERBACK SPRING GAME PLANS:

Nebraska Football offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield spoke to the media on Tuesday, being asked immediately how his quarterbacks are developing and the plans for their playing time for Saturday’s Red-White Spring Game…

The Big Red have three scholarship quarterbacks set to participate Saturday, including returning starter Heinrich Haarberg and incoming freshmen Daniel Kaelin and Dylan Raiola.

 

SATTERFIELD – ERVIN & JOHNSON ‘COACH ON THE FIELD’:

Marcus Satterfield, Nebraska Football’s offensive coordinator, has missed running backs Gabe Ervin Jr. and Rahmir Johnson during spring practices, but reiterated on Tuesday that both are still very involved with the program…

Ervin and Johnson had their season end against Northern Illinois last season with injuries as both continue to recover in hopes of playing later this fall. 

 

SATTERFIELD – HAARBERG MORE COMFORTABLE:

Nebraska’s returning starting quarterback Heinrich Haarberg started for all five wins of the Huskers season in 2023 and continues to compete this spring for the starting job. Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield said the Kearney Catholic alum has shown vast improvement since last year…

Haarberg ended last season as the team’s leading rusher, but suffered an injury that sidelined him for the final two games of the year.
