NO HITTER LEADS HUSKERS TO HOME WIN OVER K-STATE:

Junior Jackson Brockett tossed the sixth individual no-hitter in Nebraska baseball history, and the first nine-inning no-hitter since 1954, in Nebraska’s 8-0 win over Kansas State on Wednesday night at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

It marked NU’s first individual no-hitter since 1981, when Anthony Kelley didn’t allow a hit over seven innings against the Oklahoma Sooners. It was just the second ever nine-inning individual no-hitter, joining Richard Geier’s no-hitter in 1954 against the Kansas Jayhawks.

In his first start of the season, Brockett posted a career-high 12 strikeouts on 107 pitches which is the most punchouts by a Husker hurler since Will Walsh last season. The outing was the second complete-game shutout by a Nebraska pitcher this season, joining Brett Sears who tossed a two-hitter against Ohio State earlier this season.

Nebraska (28-15) totaled eight runs on 12 hits and an error, while Kansas State (26-18) was held without a run or hit with two errors.

Nebraska travels to Minneapolis Minn., for a three-game conference series this weekend with Minnesota on Friday-Sunday, May 3-5 at Siebert Field.

KEARNEY GIRLS DROP DISTRICT FINAL; GISH BOYS PREPARE FOR LSW TONIGHT:

Most Class A Girls Soccer District Finals wrapped up Wednesday night, as the final boys matchups are set for tonight.

At Kearney High School, regulation and overtime could not determine a winner between top-seed Kearney and two-seed Millard West in the A-5 District Championship. The Bearcats would fall just short in the title contest, dropping the shootout 4-3.

However, all four district leaders ahead of Kearney won their respective tournaments, leading Kearney into the lone Class A wildcard berth for next week’s state tournament in Omaha.

Grand Island boys soccer takes their shot at undefeated Lincoln Southwest at Seacrest Field tonight with kickoff set for 5 PM.

Class B district finals for girls and boys will be set later today.

For more scores and schedules, check out KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

CLASS A BASEBALL DISTRICTS ANNOUNCED:

The Class A baseball districts were officially posted by the NSAA on Wednesday morning, pitting Grand Island and Kearney to road trips towards the Capital City this weekend.

Grand Island (15-8) will play the winner of the No. 3 Bellevue East (15-16) and No. 4 Omaha Buena Vista (1-24) matchup at Sherman Field Saturday as part of the A-6 District.

Kearney (15-13) enters the A-1 District, hosted by top-seed and top-rated Lincoln East (27-1) ready to matchup with No. 2 seed Omaha Westside (15-14). That game is set for first pitch at 1:30 PM or at the conclusion of the Lincoln East and Omaha South/Omaha North contest at 11 AM.

KGFW will broadcast the Kearney contests Saturday with Ethan McCormick on the call.

HUSKER HOOPS UNVEILS 2024-25 HOME AND ROAD MATCHUPS:

The Big Ten Conference unveiled the home and road matchups for the 2024-25 men’s basketball season.

With 18 teams following the additions of Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington, the Big Ten schedule features three double-play opponents and one game apiece against the remaining 14 conference schools to make up the 20 Big Ten contests.  Nebraska’s double-play opponents for the upcoming season are Iowa, Maryland and Ohio State.

The 10 Big Ten home games include a visit by Big Ten Tournament champion Illinois and UCLA’s first trip to Lincoln since the 1955-56 season. NU will also play host to postseason qualifiers Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State, as well as Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Rutgers and USC.

Schedule dates and start times will be available closer to the start of the season. More details can be found at KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

TWO HUSKER TRACK & FIELD STARS EARN CONFERENCE HONORS:
Nebraska track and field’s Darius Luff was announced as the Big Ten Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and Tyus Wilson was named the Big Ten Men’s Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday by the conference office.

Luff, a senior from Lincoln, Neb., flew to a 13.25 in the 110m hurdles on Saturday to win the pro division at the Drake Relays. That broke his own school record and put him at No. 1 in the NCAA.

Wilson, from Sterling, Kan., cleared a personal-best 7-5 (2.26m) in the high jump to secure the Drake Relays title. That mark moved Wilson to No. 2 in the NCAA and No. 5 in school history.

Part of the team will compete at the Shocker Open in Wichita, Kan., on Friday ahead of next week’s Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.

UNK WOMEN’S TENNIS DOMINATES ALL-MIAA TEAM:

The Nebraska-Kearney women’s tennis team, 2024 MIAA regular season champions, is well represented on this year’s all-conference squad.

UNK picks up the Freshman of the Year (Fabiana Gamboa) and Coach of the Year (Scott Shafer) and then has four selections on the first-team and four more receiving honorable mention accolades.

Senior Melisa Becerra (Colombia) and junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) earn first-team singles honors with the pair also being first-team at number two doubles.

Junior Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and freshman “Tanya” Midzi (Zimbabwe) are honorable mention choices at five and six singles as is senior Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) and junior Masha Hatouka (Belarus) at three doubles.

LOPER MEN’S TENNIS ENDS SEASON IN CONFERENCE TOURNEY:

The 29th-ranked Ouachita (Ark.) Baptist Tigers swept the Nebraska-Kearney men’s tennis team, 4-0, Wednesday morning in a MIAA/GAC Tournament quarterfinal match Wednesday morning in Edmond, Okla.

The Lopers end at 13-11. This was UNK’s first season back since the program was eliminated in 2018 and they were aiming for their first postseason win since April 2015.
