GRAND ISLAND — Starting Wednesday, May 8, South Locust Street will have lane restrictions between Highway 34 and the Wood River Diversion Canal for a paving improvement project.

Southbound lanes of South Locust St. will be closed, and traffic will be reduced to one lane of travel in both directions in the northbound lanes. The Lake Street intersection will remain open at all times. Temporary driveways will be constructed to maintain access to adjacent property owners. The southbound lanes of South Locust St. are tentatively planned to be closed until July 2024.

The project includes reconstruction of the outer two driving lanes of the roadway section for both northbound and southbound lanes from Highway 34 to Wood River Diversion Canal. Phase 1 will reconstruct the southbound lanes, and phase 2 will reconstruct the northbound lanes later this year. No major changes will occur to the number of lanes or the roadway geometry, but the project will also include minor storm sewer construction at Lake Street.

On March 12, 2024, City Council awarded the construction contract to Elsbury Construction, LLC of Grand Island, Nebraska for $2,626,321.60.
