KEARNEY SOCCER DROPS SHOOTOUT LOSS IN QUARTERFINAL BATTLE:

The Kearney girls soccer team had #2 Omaha Marian on the ropes, but the Crusaders pulled through late in regulation to send the opening game of the state soccer tournament to overtime, eventually winning in a shootout 3-1.

#7 Kearney scored in the first sixteen minutes off a Molli Kalsbeck strike and score assisted by Claire Karjalainen. They held that lead until Marian’s Paige Miller tied the contest with four minutes remaining in regulation, as the Crusaders eventually pulled off the win in the shootout.

Kearney ends their season at 14-4 overall with a rising group of freshman, sophomores, and juniors. For full photo galleries, game recaps, and broadcast replays check out KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

STATE SOCCER SEES DAY TWO GAMES ADJUSTED:

State Soccer championship schedules were adjusted on Monday due to the severe weather crossing the state Monday evening.

The Class A Girls began the action yesterday as Kearney and Columbus nearly pulled off low-scoring upsets, as both fell in shootouts with Omaha Marian and Lincoln Pius X moving on to the semifinals.

The rest of the Class A Girls quarterfinals were pushed to this morning, with Lincoln Southwest and Millard West set to begin competition at 9 AM with Lincoln East and Gretna competing at 11 AM.

The Class A Boys field will follow beginning at 1 PM.

For more details, game times, game recaps, broadcast schedules, and photo galleries check out KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

BROCKETT NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Junior Jackson Brockett has been named the Big Ten’s Pitcher of the Week and earned Pitcher of the Week recognition on the national level by D1Baseball and Perfect Game on Monday afternoon.

Brockett tossed the sixth individual no-hitter in program history, and the first nine-inning no-hitter since 1954 in Nebraska’s 8-0 win over Kansas State last week.

In his first start of the season, Brockett posted a career-high 12 strikeouts on 107 pitches, which is the most punchouts by a Husker pitcher this season. The Omaha, Neb., native issued two walks and had one K-State hitter reach on an error while facing two batters over the nine-inning minimum.

Brockett’s recognition from the conference is the third for the NU pitching staff this season after Brett Sears and Mason McConnaughey earned the weekly accolade in back-to-back weeks earlier this season.

SYDNEY GRAY CLAIMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOD:

Sydney Gray was named the final Big Ten Player of the Week of the 2024 season on Monday. Gray was honored for the third time this season, as she tied for the most player-of-the-week awards in a season in Big Ten history.

Gray is just the eighth player in Big Ten history to be named the Big Ten Player of the Week three times in one season. She is only the third player to win the award three times in a season since the Big Ten expanded to 12 teams beginning with the 2012 season. Gray is a four-time Big Ten Player of the Week in her career, which ties for the 10th-most awards in conference history.

Gray was honored after an outstanding series at Minnesota last weekend, when she helped the Huskers to a 2-1 series victory and a top-four conference finish. Gray went 6-for-11 (.545) in the three-game series with two home runs and seven RBIs. She had at least two hits, one run and one RBI in each game of the series.

STORM COMPLETE FIRST PHASE OF USHL DRAFT:

The Tri-City Storm completed the first phase of the 2024 USHL Draft Monday evening by making ten selections in the ten-round draft of 2008-born players. The Storm drafted six forwards, three defensemen, and one goaltender in Monday’s draft. Phase II of the 2024 USHL Draft will begin today at 11:00 am CT.

LOPER TENNIS BACK IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS; HOST REGIONAL:

The 15th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women’s tennis team is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018 and for the 12th time in program history.

UNK (19-5) is the top seed in the six-team Central Region and will play either fourth-seed Northwest Missouri or fifth-seed Augustana at Harmon Park this Saturday, May 11. First serve time is set for 2 p.m. The Bearcats (21-4) and Vikings (18-4) will square off Friday in Harmon at noon.

During the regular season, the Lopers won at Northwest by a 5-2 score and lost at Augustana, 4-3, in a match played indoors. The win over Northwest snapped a seven-match losing streak in the series with UNK not having beaten Augie since that 2010 NCAA match.

KOBELT NAMED HUSKER MEN’S TENNIS COACH:
Peter Kobelt has been named the 12th head coach of the Husker men’s tennis team, Athletic Director Troy Dannen announced Monday.

Kobelt served as the interim head coach this past season, leading the 2023-24 team to one of the best seasons in Nebraska history. Kobelt accomplished the best record by a first-year coach in program history, leading the Big Red to a 17-10 record.

The feat of 17 single-season wins was a program best since 1990, and Kobelt led the Huskers to the first Big Ten Tournament Semifinals in school history.
