KEARNEY — Three Kearney Public Schools teachers were honored today with the VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Post Recognition Award, also known as the VFW Teacher of the Year:
• Ashley Markwardt from Northeast Elementary
• Stacie Pearson from Hanny Arram Center for Success
• Wendy Deyo from Windy Hills Elementary
This award recognizes teachers who excel in promoting citizenship education within their classrooms and schools.
Ashley Markwardt instills in her students a deep respect for our flag, country, and veterans.
Stacie Pearson, a veteran educator with 26 years of teaching experience, involves her students in volunteer activities at a local assisted living facility, providing them with opportunities to meet and learn from veterans.
Wendy Deyo, who has been teaching for 22 years, consistently fosters and exemplifies good citizenship in her classroom and the broader learning community, emphasizing respect and appreciation for others and oneself.
