Cicada emergence has begun

The cicada emergence has begun, and the Illinois Agricultural Pest Survey coordinator says she isn’t expecting damage to row crops.

But Kelly Estes says there could be some impacts to other plants.

“We think of it more as a potential for ornamental trees, potentially feeding on that,” she says.  “And younger trees are definitely more susceptible.”

She tells Brownfield…

“Saw emergence, the first start of it, in Sullivan, IL, and we’ve had reports of cicadas singing in southern Illinois already.”  She says, “So, as it gets warmer and the soil continues to warm up, you are going to see more and more emergence.”

For the first time since 1803, two periodical broods of the insects are emerging in the state, along with the annual version.
