Wet spring brings fast weed emergence

An extension agronomist says the wet spring has caused an increase in weed pressure.

Meaghan Anderson with Iowa State University says waterhemp has been prevalent across the Corn Belt. “We’ve got emergence on a lot of species in areas that haven’t had herbicide down, including a significant amount of waterhemp just in the last week.”

She tells Brownfield some producers haven’t been able to apply pre-emergent herbicides. “It may result in the need for people to make some slight changes so that they can make sure to get control of those ones that have already emerged in these fields.”

Anderson says the wet field conditions can also lead to an enhanced risk of disease issues in crops.
