NEBRASKA SOFTBALL RUN-RULES MINNESOTA TO LAUNCH TO BIG TEN SEMIFINALS:

The Nebraska softball team hit three home runs and scored in four of its five innings Thursday en route to an 11-2 run-rule victory over Minnesota in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City.

Billie Andrews homered twice to power the Husker offense with a 2-for-3 day that included three runs and four RBIs. Emmerson Cope hit a two-run home run and went 1-for-1 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and three RBIs. In the game, eight Huskers scored a run, seven had a hit and six produced an RBI.

Sarah Harness (9-5) earned the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on just three hits.

With the win, Nebraska (30-22) advanced to today’s first semifinal where the Huskers will take on Indiana at 4 p.m.

 

FORMER KEARNEY COACH CARSON JOINS AMHERST:

The Amherst girls basketball program has found their next leader.

JD Carson, the former Kearney High School girls basketball head coach and longtime assistant coach, was named the head coach for the Amherst girls basketball team. 

Carson is set to replace former coach Brandon Rohr, after Rohr announced he was stepping down from the position in early-March.

Rohr finished his four-year tenure going 64-34, including a district runner-up finish this past season going 16-8.

Carson confirmed in an interview with KGFW and Central Nebraska Today that he has accepted the position with Amherst, naming Chase Dippel as an assistant coach to join him.

The Kearney High School alum resigned from his position with the Kearney girls basketball team in November of 2023 prior to the start of the season. Kearney ended the past season 12-11.

 

CLASS B GIRLS SOCCER QUARTERFINALS WRAP; BOYS BEGIN:

All classes quarterfinals have concluded for the Nebraska State Soccer Championships as semifinals begin today and tomorrow at Morrison Stadium for Class A and B action.

Lexington fended off Elkhorn North in the Thursday nightcap contest, winning 2-0 to set up a semifinal matchup Saturday with the cinderella of the tournament #8 Mount Michael. 

Today’s matchups in Class A girls feature Marian facing Lincoln Pius and Lincoln Southwest battling Lincoln East, while the Class A boys pit Creighton Prep against Papillion-LaVista South and Lincoln Southwest against Omaha South.

STATE BASEBALL ACTION BEGINS IN OMAHA:

The Nebraska State Baseball championships begin its action today in Omaha at Werner Park and Tal Anderson Field as Class A begins its opening round. 

Action begins today at 9 AM at Werner Park with Lincoln East and Millard North while Millard West and Elkhorn South compete at Tal Anderson Field.

HUSKER BASEBALL PREPARES FOR FINAL HOME WEEKEND:

Nebraska prepares for its final home weekend of the regular season, battling Indiana for a three-game series starting tonight.

The Huskers will start Brett Sears on the mound with his perfect 7-0 starting record and 2.18 ERA. 

Through 31 all-time meetings, Nebraska holds a 16-14-1 advantage over Indiana in the all-time series. This weekend’s series is Indiana’s first trip to Lincoln since 2018.

KGFW’s pregame coverage begins at 5:30 PM tonight with first pitch at 6 PM. 

 

SUPERNOVAS SWEEP FURY:

The Omaha Supernovas swept the Columbus Fury 3-0 at home Thursday night.

The Supernovas won set one 27-25, set two 25-23, and set three 25-21. 

Omaha closes out the regular season on Sunday at home against the Grand Rapids Rise beginning at 4:30 p.m.
