KEARNEY — Voters opted for Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse when deciding who will represent District 37 in the Nebraska Legislature.
Primary election results determine the top two candidates who will advance to the November general election.
District 37 is currently represented by Senator John Lowe who is term limited, having been elected in 2016 and reelected in 2020.
Clouse, with over two decades of experience on the Kearney City Council, was able to claim 3,754 votes, 57.7 percent, according to the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website.
Lana Peister was able to tally 2,119 votes, or 32.6 percent to claim second place in the race.
Coming in third was Nathan Leach with 625 votes, or 9.6 percent.
The Buffalo County Republican Party and the Nebraska Republican Party endorsed Peister, but Clouse campaigned on the experience he has obtained over the years.
Clouse has been mayor of the City of Kearney since 2006, sat on the city council since 2003 and has been employed with the Nebraska Public Power District for over 40 years.
Clouse said he feels he has proven himself as a consensus builder and that has helped to solve issues that have appeared during his time on the city council.
When questioned as to why she was seeking the District 37 seat, Peister spoke to what she has observed happening on the federal, state and local government levels the past four years has made her concerned for the future generations and what type of world they are going to grow up in.
