HUSKER BASEBALL RUN RULED IN BIG TEN OPENER:

Nebraska opened play in the Big Ten Tournament with a 15-2 loss vs. Ohio State in seven innings on Tuesday night at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

Nebraska (34-20) scored two runs on four hits, while Ohio State (29-24) totaled 15 runs on 15 hits.

Ohio State scored in nearly every inning, including an eight-run fourth and four runs in the fifth to lead 15-1. 

Nebraska takes on sixth-seeded Purdue tonight in an elimination game tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha. KGFW’s pregame will follow the conclusion of Kearney Legion Baseball’s contest with North Platte.

 

NEBRASKA WELL REPRESENTED ON ALL-BIG TEN ACCOLADES:

Nebraska’s Brett Sears, Mason McConnaughey, Tyler Stone, Case Sanderson and Drew Christo received All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced Tuesday evening.

Sears was a first-team selection and tabbed the Big Ten’s Pitcher of the Year, becoming the first NU pitcher to be named Pitcher of the Year since the Huskers joined the Big Ten in 2012.

McConnaughey and Stone were second-team honorees, while Sanderson was a third-team selection and named to the All-Freshman Team.

Rounding out the Husker honorees was Christo, who was Nebraska’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

 

STATE GOLF CONTINUES DESPITE WEATHER DELAYS TUESDAY:

Tuesday proved to be a battle of elements across all classes in the Boys Golf State Championships. 

The only class not affected by the statewide weather was Class B in Scottsbluff, as York currently sits second, shooting a Round One total of 321, ten strokes behind leader Norris. 

In Class A at Norfolk, Kearney High sits seventh after a first round at 325. Class D at North Platte has reigning champion Overton leading the pack three strokes ahead of Hitchcock County at 336, while Loomis sits third and Lawrence-Nelson seventh. Loomis’ Tyson Essex shot an even 72 to lead the individual scoring as well. 

Class C in Columbus was delayed completely to a one-day, 18 hole event for today. Area teams competing include Amherst, GICC, Kearney Catholic, St. Paul, and Doniphan-Trumbull.

NSAA ANNOUNCES NEW STATE WRESTLING HOST CONTRACT; SEPARATE GIRLS & BOYS CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The NSAA announced that they have entered a new 5-year contract with CHI Heath Center Omaha to host the NSAA State Wrestling Championships through the 2028-29 season.

This new contract will allow the girls’ championships and the boys’ championships to be held independently.

The NSAA Girls State Wrestling Championships will be held on Tuesday-Wednesday, with the finals televised Wednesday evening on Nebraska Public Media. The Boys Wrestling Championships will be held Thursday-Saturday of the same week with the finals also televised on Nebraska Public Media on Saturday.

Additionally, girls wrestling will no longer have a sub-district round and girls’ districts will be held on the same weekend as boys districts. Girls wrestling will have two classes, starting next year.

 

GICC GIRLS TENNIS ENDS AS CLASS B RUNNER-UP:

The Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders performed well during the 2024 Girls State Tennis championships, finishing as runner-up in Class B to Elkhorn North’s dominant performance. 

The Crusaders had top finishes in doubles, as Carolyn Maser and Tristyn Hedman ended as runner-up in the No. 1 Doubles while Lauren Schardt and Kelsey Knapp were runner-up in No. 2 Doubles.

Hastings finished 8th with Kearney Catholic behind them. In Class A, Kearney finished ninth.

 

KEARNEY LEGION BASEBALL BEGINS SEASON WITH HOME DISTRICT TILT:

The Kearney Legion Baseball season begins today with the Misko Sports Seniors and the Pinnacle Bank Post 52 Juniors welcoming North Platte to Memorial Field. 

The Seniors game begins the action at 5 PM with KGFW’s pregame at 4:45 PM. The juniors matchup will follow.

LOPER WOMEN’S TENNIS WRAPS SEASON WITH ELITE EIGHT LOSS:

Six-time defending national champion, top-ranked and top-seeded Barry (Fla.) downed 15th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 4-0, in an Elite Eight match Tuesday night in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Buccaneers (22-4) reach the Final Four once again while a historic Lopers season ends up at 21-6.

UNK won its first-ever MIAA regular season title this year, made the NCAA Tourney for the first time since 2018, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in 12 years and reached the Elite Eight for the first time.
