KEARNEY LEGION BASEBALL EARNS FIRST WIN OF SUMMER:

The Misko Sports Kearney Legion Baseball Seniors took their first win under a new sponsorship, new coaching, and new uniforms on Wednesday afternoon downing the North Platte FNBO Nationals 5-1.

It was the first game of the season for the Kearney Legion teams, and the home opener for the summer at Memorial Field.

Kearney (1-0) won with five runs on six hits and two errors, while North Platte fell with one run on four hits.

The Misko Seniors head to Kansas City for a weekend tournament beginning Friday.

HUSKER BASEBALL TAKES DOWN PURDUE IN BIG TEN TOURNEY:

Brett Sears and Drew Christo combined to toss a two-hitter, as the duo retired 19 of the last 20 Boilermakers in Nebraska’s 6-2 win over Purdue on Wednesday night at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

Nebraska (35-20) scored six runs on 12 hits and an error, while Purdue (33-24) totaled two runs on two hits to end the Boilermakers’ season on a seven-game losing skid.

Case Sanderson had a 3-for-5 night with a double and an RBI. Gabe Swansen was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two runs scored.

Brett Sears became the first NU pitcher since at least 1999 to post a 9-0 record on the mound after dealing his 12th quality start of the season. The senior held Purdue to just two hits and allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out nine Boilermakers.

Nebraska advances to play the loser of Indiana vs. Ohio State on Friday, May 24 at 2 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

NEBRASKA CATCHER ADDED TO BUSTER POSEY SEMIFINALIST LIST:

Nebraska catcher Josh Caron was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Wednesday morning.

Formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, the National Collegiate Catcher Award was established in 2000, as Caron joins Justin Cowan (2000) and Mitch Abeita (2008) as the only three semifinalists in Nebraska history.

Caron is batting .313 this season with 14 doubles, a triple and 38 runs scored, while leading the Huskers with 11 home runs and 55 RBI.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL DESIGNATES FRIDAY NIGHT HOME MATCHUP WITH ILLINOIS:

The Big Ten Conference and FOX have announced details of the network’s Friday Night Football package for the 2024 season, including Nebraska’s home matchup at Memorial Stadium against Illinois.

The Huskers’ game with the Illini will be played on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. CT, with the game televised to a national audience on FOX. The two schools were originally scheduled to play on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Lincoln.

This is the second Nebraska home game selected for prime-time national coverage in the season’s first four weeks. Earlier this month, NBC announced it would televise Nebraska’s game against Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 7 with kickoff at 6:30 p.m.

Aside from its traditional Black Friday games at Memorial Stadium, this will be Nebraska’s first weekday home game since Sept. 20, 2001, when Nebraska hosted Rice. The game was postponed for five days following the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

KEARNEY CATHOLIC, OVERTON TAKE STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Kearney Catholic and Overton boys golf once again showcased their talent, taking state titles yesterday to wrap up the 2024 NSAA Championship slate.

The elements could not hold off a second title for Kearney Catholic, as the Stars Boys Golf team claimed back-to-back state championships with a win in the Class C Championships at Columbus on Wednesday.

The Stars fended off Columbus Scotus, outpacing the Shamrocks by a single stroke. Kearney Catholic ended with a team total of 322.
