KEARNEY — Governor Jim Pillen announced additional state funding for the Museum of Nebraska Art’s current expansion project thanks to a gift from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development during a press conference in Kearney on Wednesday, June 12.

MONA is home to the State of Nebraska’s official art collection. Founded in 1976 as the Nebraska Art Collection, the organization opened the Museum of Nebraska Art in 1986 to showcase the collection, which has grown to more than 5,000 works of art.

The construction project, which began with a groundbreaking ceremony in 2021, involves a comprehensive restoration of MONA’s existing 25,000 square feet and the addition of a new 23,000-square-foot wing.

“The expanded facilities will offer modern galleries, an enlarged outdoor sculpture garden, a community studio, and flexible event spaces. These enhancements will ensure MONA remains a dynamic cultural hub for local, national, and international visitors,” a MONA press release stated.

Pillen announced that $845,000 from the Nebraska American Rescue Plan funds would be given toward the project.

Pillen said that the state has now contributed around $9 million to the project, “it’s a great investment in the state of Nebraska.”

Pillen continued saying that he looks forward to returning for the ribbon cutting event for the MONA when the expansion is complete.

Speaking to the media following the event, Pillen said that art represents the stories of Nebraska and said they are a great way to maintain family stories for generations.

“They tell us stories and enrich our culture,” Pillen said of state art.

District 35 Sen. John Lowe was present at the announcement and said tourism in Kearney is successful because the arts are supported.

He added that Kearney is a progressive town that gets things done when it sets its mind to something.

Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse also spoke and said the City of Kearney’s largest department by budget is parks, recreation and culture.

He gestured to the MONA expansion behind him, and Clouse said that “this is a reflection of art and culture in the City of Kearney.”

“It is an asset we are truly, truly are pleased and privileged to have in our community,” Clouse said of MONA.

Andrew Dunehoo, Executive Director of MONA, was the last speaker and thanked Governor Pillen, the state economic development board, Senator Lowe, the University of Nebraska – Kearney for their partnership, the City of Kearney and the MONA staff and board of directors.

“This museum will stand the test of time…for the preservation of arts and culture,” Dunehoo said, “It will truly be a symbol on a national level to the importance of preservation in our communities.”

“This standard that we will hold in this museum will be a testament to the correct and responsible way to care for our history and our culture,” said Dunehoo.

“We are incredibly excited to unveil the reimagined MONA,” said Dunehoo. “This expansion not only increases our capacity to host larger and more diverse exhibitions and programs, but it also strengthens our role as a cornerstone of cultural revitalization in Downtown Kearney.”

Dunehoo closed by saying that one phrase that people will hear in the MONA’s marketing is, “Here in Nebraska: Art Grows Here.”

“The support from the Department of Economic Development is a testament to the value of MONA as a cultural and educational resource,” said Beth Quinn, MONA Development Manager. “We are grateful for the state’s investment in our vision and look forward to welcoming visitors to experience the new MONA.”

The newly renovated MONA will feature:

Modern Gallery Spaces: Designed to enhance visitor interaction with art, these spaces will showcase permanent collections and special exhibitions.
