COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CONTINUES INTO DAY FOUR:

The College World Series opening three days saw excellent action and memorable finishes since opening play on Friday afternoon.

Sunday showcased the first elimination game of the tournament, as Florida State’s run at the College World Series is not over yet. The Seminoles defeated ACC rival Virginia, 7-3 in a win-or-go-home game in Omaha on Sunday.

In the nightcap Drew Beam dialed it back and Kavares Tears left the yard – both leading Tennessee to a 6-1 win over North Carolina Sunday night from Charles Schwab Field in the College World Series.

In today’s action, another elimination matchup features NC State against Florida at 1 PM, while the winner’s bracket sets up Kentucky and Texas A&M at 6 PM.

KEARNEY LEGION BASEBALL WRAPS TRAVEL WEEKEND IN ARKANSAS, SOUTH DAKOTA:

The Kearney Legion Seniors ended their Chad Wolf Classic tournament run in Arkansas in a 16-6 loss to the US National Scouts squad Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Misko Seniors to 3-2 over the weekend.

Meanwhile in South Dakota, the Post 52 Pinnacle Bank Juniors finished 3-2 at the Big Stick Tournament in Rapid City.

Both teams return home on Tuesday welcoming the Grand Island legion teams for Fan Appreciation night at Memorial Field.

WEST BEATS EAST IN 8-MAN FOOTBALL ALL-STAR GAME:

The 47th edition of the Sertoma 8-Man All-Star Game pitted athletes from across the state against each in a West vs. East matchup.

The West struck gold early, then added sixteen unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take the 22-6 victory at Hastings College.

North Platte St. Pat’s Brecken Erickson was named Defensive MVP and South Loup’s Trey Connell was named Offensive MVP.

MARTINEZ.TAKES MVP IN  UFL CHAMPIONSHIP BLOWOUT:

The Birmingham Stallions shut out the San Antonio Brahmas 25-0 on Sunday to win the UFL Championship.

With the victory, the Stallions have won three consecutive spring football championships, as they won the USFL in 2022 and 2023 before the league merged with the XFL this season.

Martinez, the UFL MVP, was also named the UFL Championship MVP. Martinez went 13-for-23 passing for 98 yards and a touchdown and added 54 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. NFL legend Tom Brady presented Martinez with the Championship MVP trophy after the game.

NEBRASKA LANDS FOUR-STAR DEFENSIVE LINEMAN:
On Sunday afternoon Hitchcock defensive lineman Malcolm Simpson announced on social media what he told the Nebraska coaching staff before he left his official visit.

The four-star recruit let the staff know Nebraska is where he wanted to be and gave a verbal pledge to join the 2025 class.

The defensive lineman joins Tyson Terry as the other member of the 2025 class set to play along the defensive line. Simpson is commitment No. 11 for the 2025 class.

DeCHAMBEAU CLAIMS ANOTHER U.S. OPEN:

Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open on Sunday for the second time with his self proclaimed best shot of his life for another memorable finish on the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2 — and another heavy dose of heartache for Rory McIlroy.

DeChambeau capped off a week of high entertainment by getting up-and-down from 55 yards out of a bunker, making a 4-foot par putt to close with a 1-over 71.

DeChambeau became the second LIV Golf player to win a major, following Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship last year.
