Grand Island man detained after nearly striking police officer, meth found the vehicle

GRAND ISLAND — A Grand Island man was arrested after he allegedly almost struck a police officer with their vehicle, methamphetamine would be found upon a search during the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 18.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, at 12:59 a.m., a red 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was stopped due to almost running over a GIPD officer standing near their patrol vehicle.

Police say the man would verbally identify himself as Sergio Velasquez and would note he displayed bloodshot and watery eyes. Velasquez stated that he had not been drinking alcohol and that he did not have a driver’s license, according to the GIPD.

Officers would order Velasquez to step out of the vehicle, but he did not comply with the verbal command.

Velasquez would be removed from the vehicle by officers and as he stepped out, paraphernalia would be observed on the driver’s seat. Officers would also locate methamphetamine within the vehicle.

A drug recognition evaluation was conducted for Velasquez, and he was determined to be under the influence and unable to operate a motor vehicle.

Velasquez was arrested for no operator’s license, driving under the influence – drugs, first offense, drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. He would be booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections.
