COLLEGE WORLD SERIES SETS ELIMINATION CONTESTS FOR TUESDAY:

Monday concluded another season in the first elimination game of the week, while today’s matchups in Omaha begin another round of win-or-go home contests.

NC State was eliminated after their terrific run through the Super Regional, falling to Florida 5-4. Texas A&M moved past Kentucky 5-1 to advance to Wednesday’s winner’s bracket.

Today’s matchups feature two elimination games, as Florida State takes on North Carolina with first pitch at 1 PM, while an SEC battle matchup up Florida and Kentucky at 6 PM.

Both games can be seen on ESPN with radio coverage provided by the Omaha station 1620 The Zone.

KEARNEY LEGION BASEBALL HOSTS FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT:

After a long weekend in South Dakota and Arkansas for the Kearney Junior and Senior legion teams, both programs return back to Memorial Field to welcome their fans for a night of fun and competitive baseball.

The Post 52 Pinnacle Bank Juniors battle Grand Island’s juniors at 5 PM to begin the festivities, with the Misko Sports Seniors rematching Grand Island Home Federal seniors at 7:30 PM.

Fan Appreciation night features homemade ice cream, burgers, and other concession stand items available for purchase and provided by the Kearney Legion teams corporate sponsors.

Join KGFW’s pregame coverage beginning at 7:15 PM with Austin Jacobsen and Ford Clark on the call. Listen to Kearney Legion Baseball on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.

HUSKER BASEBALL ADDS CREIGHTON TRANSFER:

Nebraska baseball added Creighton catcher Hogan Helligso out of the transfer portal on Monday, giving the Huskers a veteran presence behind the plate.

Helligso, who will have one season of eligibility remaining in Lincoln, appeared in 126 games for Creighton, making 102 starts. At the plate, Helligso hit .286 over his career with five home runs and 49 RBI.

Behind the plate, Helligso had a perfect fielding percentage in 2024 and committed just seven errors during his Creighton Career, earning second-team All-Big East honors in 2023 as a sophomore.

The 6-foot, 180-pound right-hander gives Nebraska more flexibility at catcher. Nebraska junior catcher Josh Caron is likely to hear his name called in the MLB Draft later this month, and Nebraska will add junior college catcher Collin Cymbalista in the fall as well.

LINCOLN MAYOR ANNOUNCES DARIUS LUFF DAY:

At a celebration held Monday night, Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird declared June 7 to be Darius Luff Day, honoring the 2024 NCAA 110m Hurdles Champion.

The Lincoln native and Lincoln High graduate crossed the finish line first at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 7 in a personal-best time of 13.19, making him the first 110m hurdles national champion in school history. That time is a school record, ninth in collegiate history and 12th in the world this year.

Throughout his career, Luff has garnered four First-Team All-America honors and three Big Ten titles.

CELTICS DOMINATE GAME FIVE FOR BANNER EIGHTEEN; JAYLEN BROWN CLAIMS MVP:

The Boston Celtics again stand alone among NBA champions.

Jayson Tatum had 31 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, and the Celtics topped the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 on Monday night to win the franchise’s 18th championship, breaking a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most in league history.

Boston earned its latest title on the 16th anniversary of hoisting its last Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2008. It marks the 13th championship won this century by one of the city’s Big 4 professional sports franchises.

Jaylen Brown added 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and was voted the NBA Finals MVP.

The Celtics early season odds for next season’s championship are the highest among all teams, ahead of both the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves.
