AURORA NATIVE BAYLOR SCHEIERMAN DRAFTED BY BOSTON CELTICS
Aurora, Nebraska; meet Beantown.
The defending champion Boston Celtics drafted the former Husky with the 30th pick in this year’s NBA Draft.
The 6-7 forward was just shy of averaging a double-double for Creighton this season, averaging 18.5 points per game this past year and 9 rebounds per game on this years 25-10 team, reaching the Sweet Sixteen before falling to Tennessee. He spent five years in the collegiate ranks, with his first three years at South Dakota State before transferring to Creighton.
Scheierman is the third Creighton product ever drafted by the Celtics franchise, and is the fifth men’s basketball player since 2014 to be selected.

Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis offensive lineman Houston Kaahaaina-Torres has his announcement date set, and the No. 1 player in Hawaii per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings, could join the Huskers. the other teams in his final 4 include Utah, Arizona State, and Michigan State
Kaahaaina-Torres will announce his decision this Sunday, June 30th.
NEBRASKA BASEBALL RECEIVES VOTE IN FINAL USA TODAY COACHES POLL
In the final coaches USA TODAY College Baseball Coaches poll released yesterday, Big Red Baseball received a single vote.
The Huskers (40-22) dropped out of the Top 25, after being at #25 in the last poll. No Big Ten schools were in the poll, however future member Oregon was ranked #13.
National Champion Tennessee was the unanimous #1 in the final poll, followed by Texas A&M and Kentucky to round out the top three.
UNK’S FERGUSON COMPETES IN USATF TRIALS TODAY
Nebraska-Kearney standout Wes Ferguson runs in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Today (June 27) in Eugene, Oreg.
The men’s 800-meter first round/quarterfinals are set for 6:30 p.m. Central and can be viewed on Peacock. The start list will be revealed closer to race day; live results are available as well.
If Ferguson (Fremont) finishes in the top six of his heat or has one of the next three fastest times, he’ll advance to Friday’s semifinals.
UNK has had two Olympic athletes in recent times in US wrestler Tervel Dlagnev (2012 and 2016) and track team member Curtis Harry representing Trinidad & Tobago in the two-man bobsleigh at the 1994 and 1998 Winter Games.
KEARNEY MISKO FALLS TO NORTH PLATTE FNBO ON EARLY HIT PARADE
Jack Polk sent the first six Kearney batters back to the dugout, while North Platte would score six runs in the first two innings of play in the FNBO Nationals 9-1 victory over Kearney at Bill Wood field in six innings.
Kearney fell to 12-9 on the season, and will compete at the Mike Peterson and Coach K Tournament in Lincoln this weekend.
Kearney was only able to see two flashes of life, once in the third inning and again in the sixth. Kole Throckmorton would lead off the third with a double, followed up with a double from Tysen Cabela a couple pitches later to score Throckmorton. The other hit would arrive when Rhett Mundorf would reach on base with a single, only to end the inning stranded at third base.
In the Juniors game, Kearney Pinnacle Bank Post 52 defeated the FNBO Nationals Juniors team 19-3.
SCHLOSSNAGLE DEFECTS FROM TEXAS A&M BASEBALL TO COACH TEXAS
Jim Schlossnagle, who just led Texas A&M to its first Men’s College World Series championship series, is leaving to become the next baseball coach at rival Texas.
Schlossnagle agreed to a deal with the Longhorns just one day after a 6-5 loss to Tennessee in Game 3 ended the Aggies’ season just one win shy of their first national championship. The loss will be compounded by Schlossnagle’s defection to the Aggies’ bitter rival as they reunite as conference foes this year in the SEC.
Schlossnagle went 135-62 in his three seasons with Texas A&M, including two MCWS visits and a 53-15 record this season, which tied for the second-most wins in program history.
KEARNEY WING EARNS BIG TEN BASKETBALL OFFER:
One of the most lethal outside shooters in Class A has received a major offer from the Big Ten Conference.
Jacob Webber, a class of 2026 wing from Kearney High School, posted on social media Monday evening that he has been offered a scholarship from Iowa Men’s Basketball. It is his third Division I offer, following a prior offer from Ohio University on June 1.
Webber started all 24 games for Kearney, posting 18.0 points per game and excelling in his three-point shot. The rising junior was the Class A leader with 84 three-pointers made while shooting 42% from downtown. The three-pointers made in a season broke the previous school record at Kearney High School, as Webber also claimed the three-pointers in a game with nine made against Lincoln High.
NO STANLEY CUP COLLAPSE; PANTHERS FEND OFF EDMONTON FOR TITLE:
Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe scored goals, Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves and the Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 on Monday night in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. It was the third title-round appearance in Florida’s 30-year history; it was swept in 1996 by Colorado and routed 4-1 by Vegas last season.
This time, they were on the right side of history — after avoiding what would have been a historic collapse. The Panthers won the first three games of the series, then lost the next three and needed a win on Monday to avoid joining the 1942 Detroit Red Wings as the only teams to lose the final after taking a 3-0 lead in the title round.
Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP on Monday night despite Edmonton’s Stanley Cup Final loss to Florida, a nod to one of the greatest postseason performances in NHL history.
McDavid, who was held without a point the final two games of the final, still led all playoff scorers with 42 points, five shy of the record of 47 set by Wayne Gretzky in 1985.
NEBRASKA ADDS 2024 RUNNING BACK:
Nebraska continues to add to its 2024 roster. St. Thomas More Prep School (Oakdale, Conn.) head coach Ernest Anderson confirmed to HuskerOnline on Sunday that running back Mekhi Nelson is in Lincoln and has already begun his Husker journey.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Nelson planned to reclassify to the class of 2025 after a successful career at Wilkes Barre (Penn.) High School.
He never ended up playing a down of football for St. Thomas More. Nebraska began recruiting him heavily in early May of his senior year of high school.
Nelson officially announced his commitment to Nebraska on Monday.
TWO HUSKERS ADDED TO U21 ROSTER:
Nebraska volleyball sophomore middle blocker Andi Jackson and setter Bergen Reilly will represent the U.S. U21 National Team at the U21 NORCECA Continental Championship from June 25-30 in Toronto, Canada.
Jackson and Reilly were named to the 12-player roster from a pool of 20 athletes. Nebraska assistant coach Jaylen Reyes is an assistant coach for the team.
The team recently completed a week of training in Anaheim, California, and will open the tournament against the Dominican Republic on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
