LEXINGTON — The Lexington Police Department is reminding residents of the reduced firework discharge days this Fourth of July season.

Last summer, the Lexington city council considered reducing the number days fireworks could be discharged within the community. Previously, 11 days of firework sales and discharge had been allowed.

However, people over the years have asked for the time to be shortened due to finances, frightened pets, inability to sleep and firework refuse left out on the street.

The council had discussed the matter in 2017 with a proposed limit of five days, but firework vendors had noted they count on the revenue that comes in during those several days and preferred being able to sell during the weekend before July 4.

The new ordinance that would be passed in 2023 reduced the discharge times to seven days, June 28 through July 3, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and July 4, 9 a.m. to midnight.

“This new ordinance aims to ensure everyone can celebrate safely and respectfully,” the Lexington Police Department stated, “Let’s make this holiday season memorable while being mindful of our community’s well-being. Spread the word and celebrate responsibly.”
