HASTINGS — A Flood Watch has been issued for several counties in north central Nebraska anticipating rainfall this evening into Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service – Hastings has issued the watch for the counties of Greeley, Nance, Howard, Merrick, Polk, Hamilton and York.

The communities that could be impacted include Spalding, Polk, York, Osceola, Scotia, Aurora, Wolbach, Stromsburg, St. Paul, Genoa, Shelby, Fullerton, Central City, and Greeley.

The watch is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight through Tuesday morning.

NWS Hastings notes that flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible as thunderstorms with heavy precipitation will move through the watch area this evening into early Tuesday morning.

Some areas could experience several rounds of rain. Widespread rainfall of an inch or more is possible, with localized areas possibly seeing up to 2-4 inches.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

The NWS advises drivers to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” as the depth of water on a flooded roadway can be deceptive. The majority of flash flood deaths occur in vehicles.
