NEBRASKA REPORTEDLY HAS NEW SECONDARY COACH AFTER COOPER SURPRISE RESIGNATION:

Big Red football was not immune from Fourth of July fireworks drama over the weekend.

Evan Cooper resigned his post as secondary coach and passing game coordinator Friday. He had worked for 11 consecutive seasons under Coach Rhule. However, it appears his replacement is already lined up.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Rhule is expected to hire former Buffalo Bills defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator John Butler as the new secondary coach.

Butler has experience in the Big Ten, previously being on staff as an assistant at Penn State (2012-13) and Minnesota (2007-10).

 

KEARNEY LEGION JUNIORS TO HOST CORNHUSKER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WEDNESDAY:

The Kearney American Legion Pinnacle Bank Post 52 Juniors will compete in the Cornhusker League Championship against Grand Island Wednesday.

First pitch from Memorial Field is set for 6:30PM

 

SOUTH DAKOTA 3-STAR OT COMMITS TO BIG RED:

The 2025 Commits for Nebraska’s Offensive live continue to stack up.

Right before the 4th of July holiday Wednesday, 6-foot-6, 260-pound OT Shawn Hammerbeck committed to Big Red football. The three-star South Dakota product picked the Huskers over Kansas State, Minnesota, and Texas Tech.

 

BOWMAN SNAPS LOSING STREAK, GETS VICTORY IN CHICAGO:

Alex Bowman broke an 80-race NASCAR Cup Series winless streak on Sunday, outlasting the rain and the field to win the Grant Park 165 on the streets of downtown Chicago.

Bowman, earned his eighth career Cup Series win, holding off Tyler Reddick and Ty Gibbs in the rain-shortened race that ended with a countdown clock. When the clock hit zero, Bowman needed to maintain his lead for two laps – taking the white flag and the checkered flag – to earn his first win since March 6, 2022, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Pocono is the next NASCAR destination, as The Great American Getaway 400 Presented by VisitPA.com runs on Sunday.

 

AURORA NATIVE BAYLOR SCHEIERMAN SIGNED BY BOSTON CELTICS:

The Boston Celtics announced Saturday that the team has signed Aurora guard/forward Baylor Scheierman to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Creighton product is expected to make his Celtics debut at the NBA 2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas.

Scheierman was selected with the 30th pick in this year’s NBA Draft.

 

TOMINAGA GETS SHOT AT NBA WITH PACERS:

Former Nebraska sharpshooter Keisei Tominaga will get an opportunity to show whether he’s worth a turn in the NBA, as he agreed to an Exhibit 10 deal with the Indiana Pacers, a source told ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.

Tominaga was named second-team All-Big Ten last season after helping lead Nebraska to an NCAA tournament bid for the first time since 2014.

Tominaga is currently playing with the Japanese National team and is expected to make the roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

 

CHADRON STATE MBB HIRES NEW COACH:
HoopDirt.com’s Adam Nelson is reporting that Chadron State has hired Chris Francis from University of Sciences and Arts of Oklahoma as their new Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

Francis led the Drovers to 6 NAIA tournament appearances. This past year, the Drovers went 19-10, with a 14-8 record in conference play.
