MISKO SENIORS GO 3-1 AT KEARNEY/HASTINGS TOURNAMENT:

The Kearney Misko Seniors went 3-1 in their final tournament before postseason play.

The Misko Seniors started off with a 15-4 win over the Colorado DirtDevils, and then picked up a Saturday sweep over Millard teams on Saturday, defeating Millard South 7-4 and Millard North 4-2. They wrapped up the tournament with an extra innings loss to Lincoln Northeast’s Judds Brothers 5-4.

The Misko Seniors are now 16-13, and have one final regular season contest against Grand Island U-Save on Tuesday.

NEBRASKA ADDS FATHER OF 4-STAR ATHLETE TO COACHING STAFF:

Nebraska expanded its football staff on Sunday with the addition of Jamar Mozee, former Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North head coach, to a Senior Football Assistant Role, Mozee announced on social media.

Mozee was the head coach at Lee’s Summit North (Mo.) High School for eight years before announcing in late February he was leaving to become the offensive analyst at Central Florida.

Mozee is also the father of wide receiver Isaiah Mozee, who is committed to Oregon and has been a Husker recruiting target in this cycle.

MEMORIAL FIELD GOING TO GRASS FIELD:

The days of artificial grass inside Memorial Stadium are coming to an end.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said the plan is to replace the FieldTurf with natural grass.

Dannen said the change could potentially be done in time for the 2026 season, meaning just two more seasons on FieldTurf.

ALCARAZ WINS WIMBLEDON MEN’S FINAL OVER DJOKOVIC:

Carlos Alcaraz was ready from the get-go this time. A year ago in the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz got off to a slow start, dropped the opening set and needed five to claim his first championship at the All England Club.

Sunday’s rematch began with a game that felt monumental: 20 points across nearly 15 minutes, portending an engrossing, back-and forth contest — and a long one. There were moments of brilliance from both men. Alcaraz, though, was better. Just as he would be for nearly all of the next two hours.

Alcaraz learned from 2023 and applied those lessons to 2024, adding up to a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Djokovic for a second consecutive Wimbledon championship and fourth Grand Slam title in all. And to think: He is still just 21.

KREJCIKOVA WINS WIMBELDON WOMEN’S FINAL OVER PAOLINI:

Barbora Krejcikova points out that she couldn’t possibly have known she could claim a Grand Slam singles title — until, that is, she actually did, three years ago at the French Open.

So it stands to reason — as Krejcikova mentioned to a small group of reporters at the All England Club on Saturday night while wearing her new purple pin signifying having won a championship at Wimbledon — that she couldn’t possibly have known she would manage to collect a second major trophy, either.

And after she did get No. 2, via a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Jasmine Paolini in the final at Centre Court, Krejcikova explained that no one can predict what comes next for her.

LEX NATIVE MONTE KIFFIN CELEBRATION OF LIFE DETAILS ANNOUNCED:

Lexington native and longtime pro football coach Monte Kiffin died Thursday. He was 84.

A celebration of life in honor of Kiffin will take place next Saturday at Indian Rocks Baptist Church in Largo, Fla.

The longtime Nebraska and NFL Defensive Coordinator was the Defensive Coordinator for the Huskers 1970 and 1971 National Championship teams, and won Super Bowl XXXVII with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003. While in Tampa, he also helped create and implement the Tampa 2 Defense with Tony Dungy. His tenure with the Buccaneers as DC (1996-2008) ranks as the longest tenured coach in franchise history.

NEBRASKA MBB NON-CON SCHEDULE RELEASED:

Nebraska men’s basketball has released its non-conference slate for the 2024-25 season.

The Huskers will play 11 games outside of the Big Ten Conference this next season. Six of those games will be in Lincoln.

After an exhibition with Grand Valley State, NU will open against UT Rio Grand Valley Nov. 4. That will be followed by home affairs with Bethune Cookman (Nov. 9) and Fairleigh Dickinson (Nov. 13).

The lone true road game for NU in the non-con is Nov. 22 at Creighton. With the Husker women slated to play at CU that same day, reports indicate the games could be played as a double-header.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY PLAYER REPRESENTATIVES ANNOUNCED:

The event will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 23-25. Nebraska will participate on July 24 with Iowa, Michigan State, Penn State, UCLA and USC.

The Huskers are sending three seniors: Ben Scott, Isaac Gifford, and Ty Robinson. Coach Matt Rhule will also be there.

All three of the participating Huskers have earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades. The trio has a combined 103 games of experience.

UNK MBB ASSISTANT COACHES NAMED:

Nebraska-Kearney head men’s basketball coach Marty Levinson announced today that Mitch Runco and Rob Fuller will serve as his assistant coaches.

Runco will have the title of Head Assistant with the pair officially starting their duties this month.

BERHALTER FIRED AS USMNT COACH AFTER DISASTROUS COPA AMERICA:

Gregg Berhalter was fired 10 months into his second stint as U.S. men’s soccer coach, leaving the Americans searching for a leader less than two years before they host the World Cup.

Berhalter was dismissed Wednesday, nine days after his team’s first-round exit from the Copa America flamed doubts he was the right person to remain in charge.

Jürgen Klopp, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Marcelo Bielsa are among those being speculated about as candidates to replace Berhalter, along with Jesse Marsch, Hugo Pérez, Pellegrino Matarazzo, David Wagner, Steve Cherundolo, Jim Curtain, Massimiliano Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino.

BERYL DAMAGES ROOF TO NRG STADIUM:

Several panels were missing from the retractable roof of NRG Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Houston Texans, in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which has left millions in Texas without power and the cause for multiple deaths in Texas and Louisiana.

Video posted by The Associated Press showed at least three panels missing from the stadium’s roof.

Beryl made landfall in Texas on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane.

Minute Maid Park, the home of the Houston Astros, did not sustain serious damage from the storm. The Astros will host the Miami Marlins as scheduled Tuesday night.

TOMINAGA NAMED TO JAPAN OLYMPIC TEAM:
Former Husker men’s basketball standout Keisei Tominaga became the second Nebraska men’s basketball player selected to the 2024 Paris Olympics, as Japan announced its 12-member team Monday morning.

Tominaga, who recently signed an Exhibit 10 contact with the Indiana Pacers, will participate in his second Olympic games, as he was a member of the 3×3 team for Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Japan will wrap up its Olympic preparations against Germany on July 19 before opening pool play with Germany on July 27. Japan will also take on France and Brazil in pool play.

He has been a member of the Japan Senior National Team for three years and helped Japan qualify for the Paris Olympics at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Tominaga joins Jack McVeigh (Australia) as players in the 2024 Olympics, while former Husker great Tyronn Lue will serve as an assistant coach for the United States.
