Nebraska fans have their first opportunity to see the 2024 Husker football team on Saturday night at the Big Red Preview presented by 1890 Nebraska. The open practice at Memorial Stadium will give Husker fans an inside look at a full practice, as the team completes its first week of preseason camp.

Tickets for the Big Red Preview remain on sale at Huskers.com/tickets.  All tickets for the Saturday night event are digital and tickets are $25 each. All proceeds from the event will go to 1890 Nebraska.

Memorial Stadium will open for the Big Red Preview at 5:30 p.m., with the Huskers set to take the field for practice at approximately 6:30 p.m.

HUSKER ATHLETICS MOVES TO CASHLESS CONCESSIONS:

The Big Red Preview event will be the first athletic event of the 2024-25 season to feature Nebraska Athletics’ new cashless concessions operation.

Nebraska has featured cashless concession operations for men’s and women’s basketball games at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and beginning this season all Husker athletic venues will move to cashless concessions.

Improved WiFi in the Memorial Stadium concourses for the 2024 season allows Nebraska to implement cashless concessions and improve the overall efficiency of the concession operations at home games.

Nebraska will also implement cashless operations at women’s soccer (Hibner Stadium) and volleyball (Devaney Center) this fall.

“We look forward to partnering with the cities of Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Las Vegas as they host the Big Ten Basketball Tournaments from 2025-28,” said Big Ten Commissioner, Tony Petitti. “Each city will be an exciting postseason opportunity for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans, both locally and from across the country.”

The 2025 TIAA Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament will take place March 5-9, followed by the 2025 TIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament from March 12-16. The events will be the first to feature a 15-team field following the additions of Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington this summer.

The TIAA Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament is back in Indianapolis for the 14th time. Seven different teams have claimed the Big Ten Tournament title since the inaugural event in 1998, including Illinois winning its fourth tournament championship in 2024.

SPORTS GAMBLING PROPOSALS HEARD IN UNICAMERAL YESTERDAY:

Proposals to allow online sports betting from anywhere in Nebraska, and to allow the Legislature to ask voters to legalize it this November, were heard Wednesday during the Legislature’s special session.

Nebraska currently allows sports betting, but only at casinos located at the state’s horseracing tracks. Sen. Eliot Bostar wants to expand that, sponsoring a constitutional amendment to allow mobile online sports betting anywhere. Bostar told a public hearing of the General Affairs Committee that Nebraska is missing out.

Former Nebraska football coach and congressman Tom Osborne was among those opposing the proposal, which he said could put additional pressure on student athletes. And he cast doubt on the economic benefits that are supposedly being lost.

The $32 million a year in tax revenue that supporters say the proposal would generate is about six-tenths of one percent of the $5.3 billion in property taxes levied last year. Efforts to reduce that amount continue, as senators consider other proposals in their ongoing special session.

WEDNESDAY OLYMPIC STORIES IN BRIEF:

LEDECKY DOMINATES 1500M FREESTYLE FOR EIGHTH GOLD OF CAREER:

On a night when Léon Marchand was attempting an audacious double, Katie Ledecky proved again she’s a sure bet in swimming’s longest event.

Ledecky romped to the eighth Olympic gold medal of her brilliant career and 12th medal overall with a runaway victory in the 1,500-meter freestyle Wednesday at the Paris Games. She also confirmed after the race that she has no plans of retiring and wants to compete in Los Angeles.

US MENS BASKETBALL EASILY GETS PAST SOUTH SUDAN:

The U.S. clinched a trip to the quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics by beating South Sudan 103-86 on Wednesday night — a game that wasn’t ever really in doubt but was no romp either. Bam Adebayo scored 18 points and Kevin Durant had 14 for the Americans, who took control with a 25-4 run in the first half.

And led by Adebayo, the U.S. reserves scored 66 points.

Anthony Edwards scored 13 and LeBron James added 12 for the U.S. Nuni Omot led South Sudan with 21 points, while Carlik Jones scored 18 and Bul Kuol added 16.

US 3X3 BASKETBALL TEAM FALLS TO POLAND:

The U.S. men’s 3×3 basketball team fell to 0-2 in pool play in the Paris Olympics with a 19-17 loss to Poland Wednesday night.

Jimmer Fredette cut the lead to 1 with about 90 seconds left before Michał Sokołowski made a free throw a few seconds later to extend the lead to 19-17.

The U.S. had a chance to tie it late, but Fredette’s 2-point attempt came up short. Fredette, who was brought in to boost the team after the U.S. failed to qualify for Tokyo, appeared to sustain an injury with about three minutes left. He looked to be in pain as he was tended to by a trainer but soon returned to the game.

US WOMEN’S SOCCER SECURES FIRST PLACE IN GROUP B W/ AUSTRALIA WIN:

Goals from Trinity Rodman and Korbin Albert gave the U.S. women’s national team a 2-1 win over Australia in Marseille on Wednesday to secure first place in Group B at the Olympic Games and set up a quarterfinal against Japan in Paris on Saturday.

The U.S. went into the game with a place in the knockout phase already confirmed after two impressive wins over Zambia and Germany, while the result resulted in elimination for Australia.

The Americans made it a perfect three wins of three in France after Rodman broke the deadlock when poking the ball home from close range following a corner in the 43rd minute. The goal took several minutes to be confirmed after an apparent equipment malfunction between the referee and VAR while reviewing a potential offside against Sam Coffey.

COACH RHULE COMMENTS – PRE CAMP PRESS CONFERENCE:

Matt Rhule has one big goal in mind for the Husker defense this upcoming season, based on one stat line that was crucially missed last year…

Nebraska had the worst turnover margin last year since the 2007 season.

Coach Rhule is happy so far with how everyone has held each other in check this summer…

And Coach Rhule didnt mince words about five star quarterback Dylan Raiola’s development for a potential true freshman season…

Today is the opening day for Fall training camp for Nebraska football. The season opener is August 31 against UTEP.

BENHART NAMED TO OUTLAND TROPHY WATCH LIST:

Nebraska offensive tackle Bryce Benhart was tabbed to the 2024 Outland Trophy Award Watch List on Tuesday.

Benhart, a 6-foot-9, 315-pound senior from Lakeville, Minn., earns a spot on the watch list for the first time in his career after earning All-Big Ten honors from both the coaches and media in 2023.

His play helped Nebraska rank second in the Big Ten in rushing offense at 176.8 yards per game despite the Huskers starting three different quarterbacks and four running backs because of injuries. Benhart was the only Husker to start all 12 games on offense during the 2023 campaign.  For his career, he has made 41 career starts, all at right tackle, and has tied the school record for most career starts by a Husker lineman.

Benhart will look to add to Nebraska’s impressive legacy, as the Huskers have had a nation-leading nine Outland Trophies, including six from Husker offensive linemen. Benhart is one of 75 members on the preseason list, including 13 from the Big Ten.

OREGON DUCK MASCOT GETS KICKED OUT OF NEBRASKA PRESS CONFERENCE:

The Oregon Duck mascot attempted to crash Nebraska’s pre-camp presser yesterday before reportedly being asked to leave for not having a credential.

Before the Duck was removed, it managed to pose for photos with several media members and even practiced its reporting skills with a microphone. While the mastermind behind the stunt remains unknown, it was clearly meant for fun. Nebraska later shared a photo on social media featuring the Duck alongside Husker mascots Lil’ Red and Herbie on Tom Osborne Field at Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska and Oregon are not scheduled to play each other in the regular season until 2026.
