MINDEN — A Kearney business owner has been sentenced to six years in prison on sexual assault and child abuse charges, he must also register as a sex offender for 25 years.
Alan Mais, 60, of Heartwell had been charged in Kearney County with nine counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child, each a Class 3A felony and intentional child abuse – no injury, a Class 3A felony.
Mais is listed as the owner of The Camera Doctor in Kearney.
On May 9, Mais pleaded no contest to two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child and one charge of intentional child abuse – no injury.
A no contest plea is neither an admission nor denial of guilt, but the plea is treated the same as a guilty plea.
During a sentencing hearing on Aug. 7, Kearney County District Court Judge Morgan Farquhar sentenced Mais to three years imprisonment for the two counts of sexual assault, to be served consecutively.
Farquhar also sentenced him to two-year imprisonment for the child abuse charges, to be served concurrently with the other counts. Mais was given four days credit for time served.
After release, Mais was also sentenced to 18-month post release supervision, and he must register as a sex offender for 25 years.
The court documents detailing the charges were ordered sealed, but the complaint says the alleged charges occurred between July 1 and Nov. 13.
An arrest warrant for Mais was issued on Nov. 14, 2023.
