KEARNEY — Kearney Community Sustainable Housing (KCSH) will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 10 a.m. for Phase One of their building project.
The two apartment buildings will have a total of 12 two-bedroom apartments, including four first-level accessible units for clients with disabilities. The apartments will be fully furnished and utilities will be provided.
The buildings will be located just east of the 30th Avenue overpass in one of only two Qualified Census Tracts in Kearney, making it eligible for grant support.
The buildings have received grant funding and generous private and public foundational support. Completion and occupation are expected in early 2026. The groundbreaking event will take place at the building site, on the corner of 30th Avenue and Railroad Street.
“Kearney Community Sustainable Housing is committed to providing safe, secure and healthy housing for our most vulnerable Kearney citizens,” says Tami Moore, Executive Director of KCSH. “Our family service agencies do an amazing job with resources available, but building additional units is not something they can do.”
A process will be used to select residents. Due to the stipulations of grant funding, priority will be placed on qualified unhoused families facing homelessness, elderly, handicapped, individuals and families in transitional crisis situations, and legal refugee families.
The apartments will have 6 to 24-month placements depending on the client’s circumstances. Monthly rent will be determined by a combination of factors including grant requirements, client resources and availability.
“I am proud to support our mission to address the urgent and future housing needs of our community,” says Theresa Yaw, Board Treasurer at KCSH. “By providing safe and sustainable housing for individuals and families in crisis, we are not only helping them transition to stable living situations but also strengthening the workforce and reducing homelessness in the Kearney area. The resources we will provide ensures that those in need receive comprehensive support, paving the way for long-term stability and success.”
KCSH is a local non-profit dedicated to addressing the need for short-term housing options for Kearney’s unhoused population. KCSH works with local family service agencies to identify, screen and support families placed in KCSH homes, providing financial literacy, health and wellness resources and career preparation.
