Domestic assault call results in discovery of meth, arrest for terroristic threats

GRAND ISLAND — A call regarding a domestic assault resulted in the discovery of methamphetamine and an arrest for terroristic threats, strangulation and assault on Thursday, Aug. 8.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, at 6:58 p.m., officers were called to W. 5th St. in response to a disturbance.

Arriving on scene, officers heard a man and woman yelling. It was reported that the man, identified as James Atkins, assaulted the woman in the apartment. The couple had been in a relationship for three years.

The 39-year-old woman reported that Atkins struck her multiple times with a closed fist, strangled her and wielded two weapons against her while threatening her life.

The woman had red marks, small lacerations and bumps on her body when speaking with officers.

During a consent search, officers located the weapons used as well as drug paraphernalia, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Akins was arrested for terroristic threats, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, third degree domestic assault – cause bodily injury, assault by strangulation, possess controlled substance, possession of marijuana – first offense and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections.
