KEARNEY — Kearney High School is committed to providing an optimal learning environment for all students.

In pursuit of this goal, we are implementing an updated Cell Phone/Earbud/Smartwatch Policy for the 2024-2025 school year. This policy is designed to minimize distractions and ensure that students remain focused on their academic responsibilities.

Permissible Times for Cell Phone and Earbud use:

• Lunch

• Passing periods

• School activities

• Before and after school.

Non-permissible Times for Cell Phones and Earbud use:

• Cell phones and earbuds are prohibited during Instructional time.

• Upon entering a classroom, students must place their phones in the designated caddy.

• Devices must remain in the caddy until the dismissal bell rings.

• Cell phones are not allowed in the hallways during instructional time

Smart Watches:

• Smart watches are permitted in class but may not be used for communication purposes.

• Teachers may request students to put smart watches away during tests.

• Smart watches will be confiscated if used for communication.

Consequences for Non-Compliance:

• In the event of a policy violation, students will be required to check in their devices at the administrative/attendance office.

• Continued violations will result in additional disciplinary action.

Restrooms and Locker Rooms:

• The use of cell phones in restrooms and locker rooms is strictly prohibited at all times. This policy aligns with the guidelines outlined in the KPS Handbook.

School Nurse:

• Students are not permitted to take their phones when visiting the school nurse. The school nurse will use the school phone to contact parents and guardians if necessary.

Emergency Student Contact:

• In an emergency situation, parents and guardians can contact students by calling the KHS attendance office at 308-865-8065. The student will then be pulled from class.

We believe these changes will enhance the learning environment and help students stay focused during instructional time. We appreciate the cooperation and support of our students, parents, and staff in adhering to this updated policy.
