KEARNEY — The Kearney city council approved the sale of a lot to Kearney Community Sustainable Housing during their meeting during the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 13.

The deed of sale was for Lot 2, Block 1, Village Plaza Second Addition, with the city receiving $20,000.00 for the sale.

The property is located north of West Railroad St. and to the immediate east of the 30th Ave. overpass.

It was noted information shared with the city council that the sale is being conducted to allow for the construction of affordable housing.

The property had been discussed at a recent City of Kearney Planning Commission meeting.

The City of Kearney had recently sought to rezone the property.

The area was last platted back in 1999 and retains an M-1 industrial district zone, even though it is surrounded by residential and commercial zoned areas.

The rezone of the area would be for R-3 residential, which allows for singe family unites, duplexes, townhomes up to six units, multi-family units and several civic uses.

A public hearing was held regarding the proposed acquisition of a 66-foot permanent right of way utility easement and a 10-foot utility easement in southwest Kearney.

The acquisition of the easements will allow for the development of infrastructure within the area.
