GRAND ISLAND – The Nebraska Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction and sentence of a Grand Island man for first-degree sexual assault of a child and third-degree sexual assault of a child.

Nimrod Torres Aquino was sentenced after a jury trial to 45 to 60 years in prison for first-degree sexual assault of a child and 1 to 3 years in prison for third-degree sexual assault of a child. The sentences were ordered to run concurrently. He was given credit for 119 days for time served.

According to the Court of Appeals ruling, the victim was sexually assaulted numerous times over a period of several years. Law enforcement became involved in the case after the victim reported the incidents to her boyfriend, and the boyfriend reported the information to a teacher. That led to law enforcement becoming involved in the case.

Aquino alleged that errors occurred, including excluding evidence from a physician who examined the victim and ineffective defense counsel. The trial occurred over several days in May 2023.

The Nebraska Court of Appeals upheld Torres Aquino’s conviction and sentence.
