GRAND ISLAND — A man was arrested after he made terroristic threats towards an officer’s child while he was undergoing a DUI test following a hit-and-run incident.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 7:15 p.m., officers responded to the area of 4th St. and Walnut St. for the report of a hit-and-run accident.

Officers made contact with a driver who said that a large pickup rear ended his Toyota van and then fled the scene prior to exchanging information.

Later, Matthew Carlton called dispatched to report that he had rear ended a vehicle and then left the area.

Officers contacted Carlton at his residence and said they detected the strong odor of alcohol coming from Carlton and that he was having issues keeping his balance.

Carlton gave a failing preliminary breath test sample and then was transported to CHI Health St. Francis hospital for a legal blood draw.

While at the hospital, police say that Carlton made a direct threat that he would murder an officer’s child. He also made vague threats that he would harm an officer and their family members.

A records check showed that Carlton had two prior DUI convictions in the last 15 years.

Carlton was arrested for terroristic threats, driving under the influence – third offense and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

He was later booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections.
