HASTINGS — Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death overall and the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-34 in Nebraska. Thanks to research, we know that suicide can be prevented.

Volunteers from the Hastings area joining the thousands of people who are gathering this season in towns across the United States to promote suicide prevention. The 1st Annual Hastings Area Out of the Darkness Walk, hosted by the Nebraska Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be held on Saturday, September 14th at 10:00 AM Brickyard Park. Event page at https://afsp.org/hastingsne.

This gathering will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education, research and support for survivors of suicide loss. In addition to raising awareness and funds to fight suicide, the walks give those who attend a chance to connect with others and know they are not alone, whether they walk in memory or in support of a loved one or in honor of their own mental health journey.

“Suicide touches one in five families in the United States. We hope that by connecting with one another, we will draw attention to this issue and keep other families from experiencing a suicide loss. Our goal is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide in Nebraska,” said Grace Manley, AFSP Nebraska Area Director.

The Hastings Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of the six across Nebraska. Local sponsors for the Hastings Out of the Darkness Walk include Runza, Hastings College, Bryan Health College of Health Sciences, Heartland Health Center, Mary Lanning, Weeks Family Farms, and Hastings Federal Credit Union.
