Kearney Public Schools Administration Office, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — School districts (Millard, North Platte, Lincoln, Council Bluffs, Columbus, and others) are being disrupted by rumors of school threats that are being spread peer-to-peer and on social media. We want to be clear that Kearney Police, working in partnership with KPS, have received no credible information about potential school violence within the Kearney Schools.

We understand how upsetting it is for students, parents, and staff to hear about violent incidents at schools, such as the shooting in Omaha and the tragic incident in Georgia last week. These incidents can spark insensitive and irresponsible remarks that are overheard and shared via social media.

Please talk with your children about the seriousness of their actions if they make idle threats, share gossip or rumors, or re-post false information. Please urge them to instead share their concerns directly with an adult.
Be assured that we will continue to investigate and respond to reports with diligence, locate the source of the rumor, and take immediate action in partnership with the School Resource Officers who are vigilant about school safety. The Kearney Police Department thoroughly investigates every report of potential school violence.

Those who knowingly begin rumors or joke about violence toward others will be disciplined and potentially charged with a crime.

We appreciate and value working in partnership with parents.

KPS Superintendent
