GOTHENBURG — After nearly a month after first being issued, the City of Gothenburg officially lifted its boil water order that had been in place since late August.

On Friday, Sept. 13, the City of Gothenburg said that the test results from Thursday indicated no trace of coliform bacteria. With two rounds of testing with no trace of bacteria, per state statue, the city could lift the order.

On Aug. 16, the city first issued the boil water order due to E. coli being located in the water system.

E. coli bacteria indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal waste. Human pathogens in the water can cause short term effects such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms.

Throughout the end of August and start of September, the city tested from various sites, upstream and downstream of the surrounding and other sites scattered throughout the city.

Test last week showed a declining number of bacteria until the Wednesday, Sept. 11 test was the first to return with no bacteria.
