GRAND ISLAND – The Hall County Board of Commissioners and City of Wood River had a public hearing the evening of Sept. 18 concerning proposed property tax increases.

Hall County Board of Commissioners Chairman Ron Peterson said Sept. 19 said that the state requires the county to have a public hearing when the property tax increase exceeds the allowable growth percentage. One factor in the property tax increase is issuance of bonds to construct an addition to the Hall County Courthouse, Peterson said.

Peterson said he and Commissioner Scott Sorensen attended the hearing. Peterson estimated that 75 to 90 people attended the hearing, and approximately 15 people spoke.

Because of state rules, people could ask questions, but the Commissioners were not allowed to answer the questions. Peterson said most of the questions dealt with assessed property value increases.

Peterson said that the governor and Legislature “have failed to address valuation increases.”
