KEARNEY — The Nebraska natives, Nick and Tyler “Ty” Talbott, are returning to their roots, in more ways than one, with the release of a new single and upcoming album. They are set to perform in Kearney on Oct. 11.
The brothers were born and raised in Imperial and began performing together in the summer of 2012. They can both recall playing various spots in Kearney during their early days.
“We started out playing at Cunningham’s back in the day,” Nick said.
Billboard defines the Talbott Brothers music as “captivating with haunting brotherly harmonies.” Rolling Stone stated that their music is “cinematic folk-rock for open highways, widescreen skies and the limitless reach of the American Heartland.”
The Talbott Brothers recently announced their forthcoming record, Borderlands (due out May 2, 2025), they also delivered the lead single from the new project on September 20, called “Kerosene.”
“This track is a playful love song that captures the essence of having someone worth returning to, someone who stands by you through both the highs and lows and accepts you for who you are. Recorded at two different studios, the brothers pieced together the final version by stitching together the best elements from each session,” the Talbott Brothers stated.
Nick said that “returning to their roots” was a phrase that came up often while they were writing the new single and are working on Borderlands record.
“After years of soaking in Portland’s eclectic energy, the brothers felt a strong calling back to their Midwest roots. Returning to their small town of 2,000 people, they realized that their unchanged hometown had been instrumental in their own evolution,” the Talbott brothers said in a press release.
“This revelation led to the creation of their new album Borderlands, set to drop on Friday, May 2, 2025. The record navigates the emotional frontiers suggested by its name — where heartbreak leads to healing, grief discovers joy, sadness gives way to happiness, anger finds forgiveness, and indifference becomes love. It’s a sonic exploration of finding the courage to leave home, while always carrying a piece of it with you,” the release stated.
Wanting to explore their humble beginnings, Nick said the music is based on an acoustic guitar and draws from the country and rock music they listened to when they were young.
The brothers wanted to keep things, “as bare bones as possible.”
“Borderlands marks a profound personal rebirth, capturing a thematic journey that brings them full circle, back to their roots. This new collection of songs embodies their return to the simplicity and honesty that originally fueled their music, delivering a powerful and introspective glimpse into their growth as artists,” the released stated.
The upcoming shows in central Nebraska will be more intimate. Nick said he and Ty often play with a band, but these shows will feature just the two of them playing acoustic guitars.
The Talbott Brothers will perform at Joe’s Honky Tonk in Kearney on Oct.11 at 7 p.m. and then at The Golden Husk in Ord on Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
