TeamMates One Mile Walk for Kearney Students

By Brian Neben Oct 14, 2024 | 1:30 PM

KEARNEY — Join the TeamMates Mentoring Program in Kearney on Friday, Oct. 18 to participate in the One Mile Walk: Making a Difference for Youth!

TeamMates Mentoring was co-founded by Dr. Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy in 1991 and since then more than 49,000 matches have been made. The TeamMates mission is to impact the world by inspiring students to reach their full potential through mentoring. TeamMates Mentoring currently supports nearly 10,000 matches in a five-state area in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Kearney is joining TeamMates Mentoring Programs across the Midwest for the One Mile Walk in the months of September and October. Throughout September and October mentors, mentees, and community participants from across the Midwest will walk in their own communities to celebrate the power of mentoring. Please join mentors and mentees from the Kearney chapter to participate in this one-mile event that will promote awareness for TeamMates and the need for more mentors.

The One-Mile Walk will be held on the UNK campus on Friday, Oct. 18 beginning at 5:15 p.m. at Cope Stadium. No pre-registration is required. The Walk will end at the south endzone of the stadium and kickoff a TeamMates Tailgate party prior to the Kearney High School football game. Join us for the walk, music, food and friendship as we share the power of mentoring to make a difference for youth.

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen said, “Not every kid needs a mentor, but every kid deserves one.” Local coordinator Heather Swanson adds, “There are students who want a mentor on the waitlist to be matched with a caring adult. Could you make time for one student, once a week at school? Walk with us for one-mile and find out more.”

For additional information contact Heather Swanson, Kearney TeamMates Coordinator (308) 293-8946.
