Large grass fire breaks out in Kearney County amid dangerous fire weather

KEARNEY CO — Amid dangerous fire weather conditions, multiple area fire departments fought a large grass fire in Kearney County during the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 17.

According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, a “massive” grass fire occurred southeast of the Gibbon Interstate 80 interchange in Kearney County.

Several area fire departments including those from Gibbon, Shelton, Ravenna, Elm Creek and Pleasanton.

“These brave men and women, along with area farmers and citizens who provided vital assistance using construction and farm equipment, fought tirelessly to contain the blaze,” the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office noted on social media.

It was noted that buildings and vehicles were lost in the fire.

There were six major wildfires that took place in Nebraska, the most intense of those were one east of Pender, southwest of North Platte and the Gibbon fire.
