BROKEN BOW — The Broken Bow Area Rotary is hosting a “Pints for Polio: Party with a Purpose” event from 5-8 p.m. today at Kinkaiders Brewing Co.

Participants will be able to buy a beer and keep the glass, with the proceeds going toward Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio.

A refurbished iron lung will be on display for viewing, a reminder of the effects of a disease that menaced people within living memory.

The Rotary organization has been working to eradicate polio for over three decades. “We’ve made incredible progress in the fight to ride the world of it forever. Now is our chance to make sure no child is disabled by polio every again.”

“Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort,” per the Rotary website.

“Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year,” the website states.
