KEARENY — On Nov. 22 at 2 p.m., Northeast Elementary School will host a special graduation ceremony for its inaugural class of fifth-grade students completing the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.
This event marks a proud milestone for the 22 participating students, who have spent the last 10 weeks gaining valuable skills to make informed, responsible choices and foster positive relationships within their community. Over 70 students will graduate in this DARE graduation.
The DARE program at Northeast Elementary began in September and has since engaged students in weekly 45-minute sessions covering critical topics like drug resistance, bullying prevention, and handling peer pressure. Led by Officer Weller, a certified DARE officer trained specifically to deliver this impactful curriculum, the program has given students the tools to lead drug-free lives and navigate challenging social situations confidently.
Principal Catherine Gundersen shared her excitement for this important addition to the school, saying, “The DARE program is a powerful asset in our mission to create a safe, supportive learning environment. I am thrilled to see our students empowered with the skills they need to make positive choices.”
As Northeast Elementary celebrates its first DARE graduates, the school looks forward to expanding this partnership with the Kearney Police Department and continuing to provide students with the resources they need to make healthy, positive life choices. This initiative is a meaningful step toward fostering a stronger, safer community for all.
