By Axtell Community School Nov 14, 2024 | 8:17 AM

Axtell Community School, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

AXTELL — Construction will begin the week of Nov. 18, 2024 and is expected to last approximately a year. As expected, Axtell Community School will have some procedural changes to our daily operations.

These changes are outlined below.

Construction Site: A fence will be erected to surround the construction site which will be located in the green space in front of the existing school building.

Main Entry and Visitor Access: Due to the location of the construction, the main doors of the school will be inaccessible. The school’s temporary entrance will be located at the north doors, off the gravel lot (south of the tennis courts/east of the fuel station, near the 4-way stop on Main Street). Limited visitor parking will be available in this lot. As the existing doorbell system will be unavailable, please contact the Axtell Community School office at 308-743-2415, before coming to the school so that we can expect you. When you arrive, please knock on the door and you will be met at the door. Visitors to the building during the school day will continue to sign in/sign out at the Main Office.

Extracurricular Activities: ALL attendees for school events will need to enter/exit through the temporary entrance doors.

Offices: During the construction project, staff will be relocated to the following locations.

Downstairs, under the main gym stage
Mrs. Hoyt, Guidance
ESU Speech Staff

At temporary entrance door
Mr. Lorenz, Principal for grades 6-12

Vicky Olson, Main Office
Cafeteria Stage

Rob Gregory, Superintendent
Jennifer Bergstrom, Bookkeeper
Office adjacent to the Cafeteria

Mrs. DeBord, Principal for grades prek-5 (existing office location)

Main Gym Emergency Exits: Should an emergency evacuation from the main gym be needed, please be aware of the following egresses:

North side of gym/”Home Team” seating
Temporary entrance doors
Playground doors near east end of the gym

On Stage/”Visiting Team” seating and Axtell Band
Exit stage at the east end (near Band seating)
Use the east alley doors, near the practice gym
Use the south/5*Street door

Parking:
School day and event parking will remain first-come, first served both north and south of the school building. Parallel parking on Fifth Street, adjacent to the construction area, will be removed. The Bus Barn parking lot will continue to be used for staff parking and school vehicles. Parking for athletic contests, concerts and other activities will be a challenge throughout the construction timeline and we appreciate your understanding.

Student Drop Off & Pick Up:

School Transportation: The construction area will affect School Bus parking. School bus/school van drop off and loading will move just a little north of the current location on Main Street.

Students entering the school in the morning will use the door next to Mrs. Lindau’s kindergarten room. A para-educator will be positioned at this door in the morning to assist with student access. The classroom teacher and/or a para-educator will escort students to the bus loading zone after school. Parents, please do not use the bus drop off/loading zone.

Parent Transportation: Students should be dropped off/picked up on the south side of the school (Fifth Street), near the grass area. Students will be able to enter (in the morning) and exit (after school) the single door near the school kitchen. The grass area will also be the location for after school pickup. The classroom teacher and/or a para-educator will escort students to the grass area after school.

Student Drivers: Students who transport themselves to and from school should park on the north side of the school and use the temporary entrance doors by the gravel parking lot.

Ground Breaking Ceremony: The Ground Breaking Ceremony for the construction project will be held Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. The location for the ground breaking will be in front of the school where the new addition will be built. Students and staff will be attending and everyone is welcome to join us for this special event. Please attend if you are able to join us!

Finally, if you have any questions or concerns about the school procedures or the construction, please contact me at 308-743-2415 or stop in for a visit.
