ELM CREEK — Elm Creek, Kearney and Overton firefighters responded to a structure fire in Elm Creek during the afternoon hours of Saturday, Nov. 16.

Around 4:23 p.m., Elm Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue was dispatched to 140 N. Mill St. in reference to a structure fire.

Tyler Hillmer, Fire Chief, said on scene the firefighters found flames coming from the front and rear of a garage on the property.

Jason Whalen, Fire Administrator for the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, said that KVFD received a mutual aid call from Elm Creek around 4:30 p.m.

Overton firefighters also responded to the call for additional manpower.

The KVFD sent five firefighters and one engine to the scene. Whalen said the fire was mostly out by the time they arrived but helped to overhaul the scene. They were on scene for around 30 minutes, Whalen said.

Hillmer said that Elm Creek firefighters were on scene for around three hours as the Nebraska State Fire Marshal investigated the fire and its origin.

The owner of the property had started a vehicle in the garage and an undetermined issue occurred which is thought to have caused the fire, Hillmer said.

The nearby house was slightly damaged by the fire, but the damage was mostly contained to the garage, which was damaged in the interior.

There were no injuries associated with the fire.
