BROKEN BOW — Amid a High Wind Warning, a large grass fire broke out near Broken Bow in Custer County during the afternoon hours of Thursday, Dec. 19.
The fire was initially reported around 3:30 p.m. near Round Valley Road and Gates County Road, north of Broken Bow.
Due to the conditions, mutual aid was requested by the Broken Bow Fire Department, with Merna, Ansley, Anselmo, Sargent, Arnold and Callaway eventually responding to provide help.
The spread of the fire south caused traffic on Highway 70 and Highway 2 to be closed.
According to a press release from Broken Bow City Administrator Dave Schmidt, the fire was estimated to be 25 percent contained around 11 p.m.
Firefighters remained on scene throughout the night, with crews continuing to hit hotspots on Friday morning.
