HASTINGS — Following the snow flurries Monday evening, the next best chance for widespread snow arrives this weekend, with very cold temperatures to start the next week.
A shortwave disturbance will emerge from the Rockies and strengthen during the day on Saturday and brings the next best chance for widespread precipitation to the area.
There is disagreement in the weather models on the timing and strength of the system, but this will bring widespread chances for snow to the area on Saturday and Sunday. Keep an eye on the forecast for projected snowfall totals.
The heavier snow seems at the moment to favor areas to the east, but there is around a 20 percent chance of two inches of snow across the Tri-City area.
Arctic air will filter in behind this system and bring the coldest air of the season to central Nebraska. Models are hinting at 15-20 degrees below normal temperatures, which would put highs in the teens and lows in the single digits or below zero.
The cold is also dependent on the snowpack from the weekend’s system, as a heavier snowpack will result in even colder temperatures.
