KEARNEY — A window heater unit caused a structure fire at an apartment unit near 38th St.in Kearney during the morning hours of Friday, Jan. 3.
Around 7:30 p.m., the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment unit near W. 38th St. for the report of a heater unit that was on fire.
After the initial units arrived on scene, they requested dispatch to re-page the event as a structure fire.
On scene, smoke could be seen emanating from an apartment unit as firefighters move into the structure with their breathing apparatuses to deal with the smoke. Eventually a large fan was used to begin to clear the smoke out.
The occupants of the structure had been able to evacuate prior to the KVFD arrival.
The fire was reported under control by 7:47 a.m.
