GRAND ISLAND — In a banner year, the Grand Island Police Department cut the city crime rate by more than 10% in 2024. However, Chief Kevin Denney says his department is just getting started.

The Grand Island Police Chief is doubling down, literally, by announcing a new goal of reducing the city’s crime rate by an additional 20% in 2025. The initiative came from a collaborative effort months ago.

“We have a command staff retreat every year, and this year the command staff got together and decided to set a specific goal for 2025,” Chief Denney said. “The command staff wanted to reduce the crime rate in 2025 by 20%.”

The ambitious goal comes with four main focus points:

  • Leadership and Culture within the police department
  • Improving community engagement
  • Strategic policing initiatives
  • Visible patrol

As part of the crime rate initiative, GIPD will also be publicizing a monthly crime rate to both its social media sites as well as its revitalized website at this link. By publishing the information for the general public, Chief Denney says it will increase the department’s accountability to follow through with their respective objectives.

“I think you need to put up or shut up when you put a goal out there,” Chief Denney said. “You need to be transparent and communicate what that goal is and how you’re achieving it.”
