KEARNEY — The National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (NAESPA) is pleased to announce that Central Elementary from Kearney has been named a National Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Distinguished School by the state education agency in Nebraska.
Central Elementary is one of 69 schools nationwide recognized for exceptional student achievement in 2024.
The National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program publicly recognizes qualifying federally funded schools for the outstanding academic achievements of their students.
It highlights the efforts of schools nationwide making significant improvements for their students. The program has been in place since 1996, showcasing the success of hundreds of schools in one of three categories:
- Category 1: Exceptional student performance and academic growth, as determined by each state
- Category 2: Closing the achievement gap between student groups, as determined by each state
- Category 3: Excellence in serving special populations of students (e.g. homeless, migrant, English learners, etc.)
According to Central Principal Teresa Schnoor, the school is being recognized for exceptional student performance and academic achievement. “I am incredibly honored and proud to accept this national award on behalf of our students, staff, and parents,” stated Schnoor. “This recognition is a reflection of the dedication, effort, and heart that our teachers and families invest into our school each day. We believe in creating a learning environment where every student feels valued, inspired, and capable of reaching their full potential. Our students are bright and talented, and I’m thrilled to celebrate this accomplishment that speaks to their hard work and commitment. Together, we’ve built something truly special at Central.”
Central’s students consistently demonstrate significant academic growth each year, enabling them to meet and often exceed state standards. This impressive progress is a testament to the dedication and hard work of both students and staff. Our collaborative approach, commitment to high expectations, and supportive learning environment all contribute to this success.
“Central Elementary’s achievement as a National ESEA Distinguished School highlights the exceptional leadership of Principal Teresa Schnoor, whose vision and commitment have shaped a culture of excellence and support,” said Jason Mundorf, Kearney Public Schools Superintendent. “Her team of talented and caring teachers consistently goes above and beyond to meet the needs of every student, creating an environment where academic growth and individual success are the norms. Central’s recognition on a national scale is well-deserved, and it stands as a powerful example of what is possible when dedicated educators work collaboratively to enhance learning and foster opportunity for all students.”
The ESEA provides additional resources for vulnerable students and federal grants to state educational agencies to improve the quality of public elementary and secondary education. The Association is a membership organization comprised of State ESEA Program Administrators and staff from each state and territory who are charged with managing their state federal education program.
They ensure compliance with federal regulations but, more importantly, work to ensure that all children — especially those living in economically disadvantaged conditions — have the opportunity to receive a high-quality education. NAESPA implements the National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program to highlight selected schools that have successfully used their ESEA federal funds to improve education for all students– including economically disadvantaged students.
